Re: Govt. Mule

Those into music-related DVDs I highly recommend this one:

In 2000, Allen Woody the bass player for Gov't Mule (who also played in the Allman Brothers too) died. To pay tribute to him the band recorded 2 albums (The Deep End Vol 1 and 2) with a series of guest bassists. The guest list included Jack Bruce (Cream), Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane), John Entwistle (The Who), Phil Lesh (The Grateful Dead), Larry Graham (Sly & the Family Stone), Joey Arkenstat, Les Claypool (Primus), Roger Glover (Deep Purple), Flea (RHCP), Chris Squire (Yes), Billy Cox (Jimi Hendrix) and Bootsy Collins (Funkadelic) - to name a few.

This movie documents the making of those albums and is narrated by Mike Gordon (the bass player for Phish). He is pretty strange but the movie overall is great. Oh and get the albums too they are fantastic!!

Re: Govt. Mule

Deja Voodoo has a good write up sweat.

It is a very good album too (I am not a very objective evaluator of Gov't Mule albums :)). It marked a bit of a different direction in sound as it was their first album without Allen Woody and they switched from being a power trio by adding a keyboard player.

Love these tracks off that album:
Slackjaw Jezebel

About to Rage

Mule!

I love Gov't Mule. I don't have a favorite album. Each album has it's good songs and bad songs on it. I have no problem saying that. But mostly, it's all good. Mule's albums sound fantastic, but Gov't Mule are better live, in my opinion.

There latest album, ''By A Thread'' is one of their strongest efforts.

Warren Haynes is great, seen him many times with Gov't Mule, Allman Brothers Band (in the 90's), Phil Lesh & Friends and with The Dead.

One of my favorite Gov't Mules songs is ''Left Coast Groovies''

It's from the first Mule album back in 1995 and was dedicated to the late Frank Zappa.

This song also features the late great Allman Brother/Gov't Mule bass player, Allen Woody...

I love the jam and dig the lyrics - Zappa would of approved!

''Left Coast Groovies''

I like my summer home
Love my yuppie job
Got a cellular phone in my brand new Saab
I love my wife and my girlfriend too
I just love myself
You're gonna love me too

Came out west to find myself
Did the Maharishi squat on the continental shelf
Got a groovy set of morals
And an Elvis Presley do
I'll swap my wife for yours
Anything for you

Got to stay away from the left coast groovies
Living their lives like a cheesy movie
The wrap around shades and the air-head cuties
Got a new-age stench because he traded his Patchouli

Can the wicked feed the hungry
Can the children teach the old
About a new way, a revolution
We're moving backwards, out of control
Out of control, out of control

Came out west to find myself
Did the Maharishi squat on the continental shelf
Got a groovy set of morals
And an Elvis Presley do
I'll swap my wife for yours
Anything for you

Got to stay away from the left coast groovies
Living their lives like a cheesy movie
The wrap around shades and the air-head cuties
Got a new-age stench because he traded his Patchouli
