Well... I quit listening to FM radio years ago because of the limited list of songs.
But I did find a local station My 95 that play's (Office friendly) music. But just like the opening post described they play the same artist's most of the time.
There is another classic rock station called The Eagle, that I tried to listen to and everyday at the same time you would hear the same songs in order from the day before.. SUCKS!!
I have collected LP's Cd's and made mix tapes for years and prefer my own choices over theirs.
Radio station for the most part are too limited and out of touch with the listening base.

That your use to it says it all. But its true we pay an annual fee for BBC but I think its worth every penny for the quality of the programmes and no commercials!

I've seen Britcoms that were pretty good, like:
2point4 Children
'Allo 'Allo!
Absolutely Fabulous
Blackadder
Coupling
Fawlty Towers
Yes, Prime Minister
My Family

But there was also shit like:
The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin
The Glam Metal Detectives
Keeping Up Appearances
Last of the Summer Wine
Maid Marian and her Merry Men
One Foot in the Grave
Open All Hours
The Vicar of Dibley

In short, you lot don't have any better of a track record for good programmes than we do.

Radio is not Music.

True, but it is a medium that mostly carries music. That's like saying concert halls aren't music. That's true, yet most concert halls are venues that are mostly used for musical concerts. The launch post of this thread was very, very clear in noting that the thread was about radio stations that mostly broadcast music, and their shortcomings. Depending on the radio market conditions in your location, I'm sure you'll find that most radio stations either broadcast only recorded music and commercials, or a mix of recorded music and commercials, with occasional breaks to carry sports play-by-play. There will also be a few stations that specialize in mostly spoken word programming, either politics/current events or sports, or maybe both. And then there's public radio. Both listeners probably know what the public stations broadcast. Finally, some locations have one or two low-powered AM brokered time "dollar a holler" religious programming stations. Granted, few AM stations still program music, considering how bad AM sounds, that's not surprising.

Here are the FM and AM stations in Atlanta. Note how many are music stations, especially on the FM band.

Now you are being subjective and all boils down to opinion. Funnily enough your above disaproval list are very 'English' programmes so I am not surprised that over in the USA they do not 'translate' very well for the American viewer.

You accuse me of being "subjective" after you posted this?

And how are shows like 'Allo 'Allo!, Absolutely Fabulous, Blackadder, Fawlty Towers, and Yes, Prime Minister not "English"? I'm not speaking for anyone but myself. I find most "English" humor quite entertaining. Hell, I was watching and laughing at the "Carry On" gang when I was a teenager!

Why not just be honest and admit you're just being a British chauvinist? Your entire set of replies reeks of, "You lot just aren't as good as we are because you're you, and you are not us."

Now you seem to sound like you have a chip on your shoulder when you don't need to be like that. Grow up, the are programmes in England which don't do well in the USA and there are programmes in USA which don't do well in UK. Same goes to music and musical acts. However when a commercial begins after the start of the show that is pain where I come from because in the UK we are not use to such intrusions in viewing TV. I would imagine the opposite would apply to kitchen appliances where electrical tin openers etc in USA were used a lot earlier while we in UK (the dark ages) still used manual tin openers. Its all swings and round abouts.:)

The main problem is that internet radio stations don't appeal to some people, most people buy a radio that tunes into FM so that they can just turn it on, tune in and listen.

Unfortunately Planet Rock is available nationally on Sky, Virgin Media, Freesat and Online, and to some locations via DAB.
I only have Online, but why Planet Rock is only on Freesat boxes and not Freeview boxes to me is a mystery, I can turn on Freeview and get Kerrang Radio, so it would be great if Planet RocK could get onto Freeview.

Digital radio (DAB) and internet stations require turning on a PC or similar to get a station.

Some DAB radio's I've seen have one speaker, how can you listen in stereo with one speaker?

On the subject of Radio stations, I live in Cornwall and from the interaction with one station I have been told that most stations have playlists, which they basically have to stick to, it would appear that they are paid to play certain tracks.

A lot of stations don't like to play rock music because of the long tracks, (but we like the long tracks don't we?), so then a lot of bands are forced to make shorter versions so that it can get air play.

This is one thing that Frank Marino doesn't like, basically he says that a track is that length because that is how long it is, that is how long the song goes on for, why should musicians be forced to shorten a song just because the suits want to make money by playing as many as they can!

Rock stations on the FM frequency (in the U.K.). you're lucky if you can find one!

I think radio stations in the UK could be under threat in all honesty, the rise of online streaming means anyone can playlist their entire music choice without annoying DJ's and adverts. At work, at home, in the car, on public transport. The only thing you won't get is the news, but the BBC app will notify you of any major stories anyway.

Listening figures at national stations like BBC Radio 1 are down anyway.

Radio pluggers will run round stations and get them to play certain tracks of course. I think my real issue here is that whilst I'm not a Metallica fan, Master of Puppets or One are much better tracks but I think are longer and far less accessible than the Unforgiven. Which is also half the issue. Take for instance Disturb's cover of Simon & Garfunkle's Sounds of Silence. That's also played a lot as well. Totally accessible whereas Metallica or Megadeth's glory periods aren't so.

I agree with Frank on that. Although there are also thousands of rock songs that are 2 - 5 minutes long that aren't a side of Yes Tales of Topographic Ocean or 2112, so IMO length of tracks is a very lazy excuse.

But to use Planet rock as an example, for a while if they used to play Led Zeppelin's Heartbreaker, any Zeppelin fan will tell you that it should always be followed immediately by Living Loving Maid otherwise it ruins your day, and they used to play it like that. The might still do, but last time I heard it they didn't. This shows they aren't afraid to play longer tracks. Perhaps theres a time and place for it on rock stations but mainstream stations aren't interested unless it's ******* Journey or Queen.

I said this before. I don't recall if it was in this thread or another, but I'm going to say it again anyway. It is dirt simple to collect MP3 recordings of almost every song ever recorded, including live versions not available on physical media or paid download. It is dirt simple to put together your own personal list of your own personal favorite songs, and play them anywhere and anytime you want. I have over 4,000 of my favorite songs ready to load into my MP3 player. With those capabilities, why would anyone want to let someone else pick their music for them?

While I mostly agree with this sentiment, there was a station back in Cali that had a DJ who would offer up a theme for the night and callers would call in with song choices to support the theme. What made it great was this DJ would delve into the theme and raise questions for people to think about. Really interesting stuff until they canceled his show.
