Characteristics. Heavy metal is traditionally characterized by loud distorted guitars, emphatic rhythms, dense bass-and-drum sound, and vigorous vocals. Metal subgenres variously emphasize, alter, or omit one or more of these attributes.

It is a way to give a base to consider choices. Maybe it should be debated as to what is heavy metal before asking what is the first song.

I see and hear that most of the tracks listed in this thread are hard rock, heavy psych, acid rock and psych or a combination of the preceding sub-genres. I'd say that some of the tracks are proto-metal but are not traditional(classic) heavy metal.

^^^Yes, ok define 'traditional classic heavy metal'.

Really? My description of "traditional heavy metal" is not a few paragraphs long. It has many elements, complexities and nuances musically, culturally and historically. No short, single description does justice to the genre of heavy metal. The influences, precursors and prototypes are staggering during the formative phase of heavy metal. The boundaries are not rigid. Your perimeters are probably different from mine. So be it. I can, as well as you can, respectfully agree/disagree what we think comprises heavy metal.

Exactly, you'd need many a post to define the family of heavy metal. I don't expect you to show the family tree in detail and go through all the motions, so to say.
