I'm always a bit puzzled by the Southern Rock category, ZZ Top is Southern Rock?, I've even seen Kansas listed as Southern Rock on some compilation albums. I'm voting Allman Brothers because I'm not completely sure, but I think they either invented or defined the genre.

I think it's been discussed elsewhere and I don't personally consider ZZ Top southern rock either. Anyway, since the poll concerns classic southern rock bands, I had to go with Lynyrd Skynyrd, but I have to mention that I love most of the bands above. It's no secret that southern rock is one of my favourite genres of music.

The Marshall Tucker Band derserves to be mentioned, since I prefer them over a couple of names in the poll.

Skynyrd are one of my favourite bands. Allman Brothers, Blackfoot, Molly Hatchet all brilliant and ZZ Top however they are categorised are just legends in my world.

Removed the poll expiration as I didn't see any reason for there to be one (no verbage or indication in any post)

Skynyrd is the epitome of southern rock, more so than any other band on here. The amount of quality music that they put out in a very short time (before the plane crash) was as good as it gets for southern rock.

I think that the Allmans were far more of a blues rock band than a southern rock band (just my opinion), although they obviously had some influence on southern rock.

ZZ Top was more of a blues band with a touch of southern rock influence during their early years. Towards the end of the 70's, they were probably more of a boogie-blues-rock band, still not what I'd typically consider "southern rock" either.

SO, Skynyrd gets my vote

I agree with you on the part about the Allman Brothers being more a blues band than a southern rock band.

Tragedy struck both of these amazing bands.

And Duane Allman was one of a kind.
I put him up there with Johnny Winters and Eric Clapton as one of the best white guitar players around.

All bands mentioned are great, but Lynyrd Skynyrd for me. Next would be the Allman Brothers Band and then The Outlaws

I love a bunch of those groups so it's kinda hard to choose. There's about 6 I couldda chose, but after further consideration, I gotta go with the mighty Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I'm starting to think I should have switched my vote to Skynyrd.

If you look at all the hits Skynyrd had over its short tragic career.
Compared to the Allman Brothers number of hits, and in my opinion Skynyrd wins.

Plus 'That Smell' is a kickass song! And who can forget the Freebird solo!
