Re: "The Official" Prince Thread

I've actually been lucky enough to have met Prince (if you are into that sort of thing) a couple of times, as well as seen him in a very small setting (live performance) a couple of times. I also met his mother, who at the time lived maybe 2 miles from where I grew up. I also used to drive past his 'estate' once in a while at night, as I lived not too far down the road from him and where Paisley Park studios is location.

If anyone wants details on any of that stuff, let me know, I'd be happy to share.

Re: "The Official" Prince Thread

As for the man's talents, I don't know where to start. I've been a fan since I first heard Controversy back in '81 (my best friend's sister had the album), from there I expanded backwards to his first album (For You), his second album (Prince) and third album (Dirty Mind) as well as 1999 when that was released.

It was really hard to define what his style was as he obviously was influenced by a number of great musicians and genres. He was funky, he was soulful, he was rock and he was pop, he was R&B ... all mixed into one tiny little package. (Yes he's TINY, I mean maybe 5'2" with heels on).

Anyway, 1999 was a great album, better than anything he did before that (IMHO) because he hit so many musical areas on that album. He wasn't afraid to get controversial with his lyrics or his music. He had numerous other songs on previous releases that proved this and 1999 just continued it. This got even bigger with Purple Rain (both album and movie) being released. Most notably with Computer Blue and Darling Nikki. There's not a single song on Purple Rain that I don't love. There was a point in time that I could rattle off any phrase, line or scene from the movie. I saw it a couple of times in the theater and bought it immediately when it came out on VHS. I couldn't even tell you how many times I watched that movie. I'd probably not be too far off though if I said (or admitted) that the only movie(s) I saw more than Purple Rain in my entire life would be the original Star Wars movies (most notably the original film).

More at another time, I've got other things to do and I don't want to ramble on too much.

In the past couple of years, I pretty much stopped DJ'ing, but I did do it for the better part of 20 years.

I'll post the Prince meetings tonight from work (where i get paid to post! :D )
