I'd like to find out why U2 is not very popular amongst the classic rock fan populace as a whole. Why is U2 not considered by the majority as one of the greats such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, The Who etc.?

I'm genuinely curious about all your opinions on this and more importantly, I'd like to know the reasons why you dislike them... if you do.

Please answer the adjoining poll. :D And please explain your like or dislike. I'm more curious about reasons behind the dislikes.

Voted: I like them.

I have four of their albums.

The Unforgettable Fire
The Joshua Tree
Rattle and Hum
Achtung Baby

Not so keen on their later stuff.

I'm a casual liker, I have their "Best Of" album...I don't need more than that.

Is that the 1980s Best of (golden colour packaging) you're talking about? And why do you say you don't need more than that? Did none of the songs make you want to explore the albums?

Cool! Those are some of their best albums anyway. But I'm also very fond of their other 90s albums, Zooropa and Pop as well as the experimental "Passengers" album with Brian Eno. The 3 albums prior to Unforgettable Fire are also great in their own post-punk sort of way.

They never really did it for me. Edge is an interesting guitar player but the overall sound is kind of boring. They also failed to really deviate much from a particular sound in each of there phases. After a few tunes on each album the schtick got tiresome.

I voted that I like them.

However, I love their early stuff from the 80s. Everything from Boy to Rattle and Hum are really good. Once Achtung Baby came out, they started to slide a bit. 'One' and 'Who's Going To Ride Your Wild Horses?' are very good but I didn't like 'Mysterious Ways' at all.

Their later albums haven't produced any singles that I like and I didn't care for their new direction so I stopped listening to them.

U2 is/was a good band but their best days are well behind them.

I was on to U2 very early. While working in Belfast in 1980 the young guy whose family owned the hotel I was in got talking to me about them, and assured me that they were 'going to be huge'. I already knew about them, and had a couple of tracks on an NME tape, but I didn't forget my conversation with him and I looked out for them afterwards. Got to admit I was absolutely knocked out by the stuff they released in the '80s and, for me, the high point was The Joshua Tree. I know many have said this was U2 pandering to the American market, but who gives a shit? It was just a fantastic album. For me they were THE band of the '80s.
