Adrian Belew Says He Wasn’t Asked to Be Part of Reunited King Crimson

Just days after Robert Fripp announced that he was putting together a new version of King Crimson, guitarist Adrian Belew revealed that he won’t be part of it.

Belew — whose long career includes gigs with David Bowie, Talking Heads and Nine Inch Nails — said on his Facebook page that he is no longer a member of King Crimson. He set up the post in the form of a Q&A:

q: are you in the new King Crimson planned for next september 2014?

a: no. after 32 years I am no longer in King Crimson.

q: were you asked to be in the new King Crimson?

a: no, I was not. robert informed me in an email that he was starting a 7-piece version of the band. he said I would not be right for what the band is doing.

Additionally, the question “So, how do you feel?” was answered with an upbeat ”Happy with what I have to be happy with … which is quite a lot.” Specifically, Belew said that he’s moving forward with the type of projects that have kept him busy over the past couple of decades, including a tour of South America with his Power Trio and a European tour next spring with the Crimson Project, which performs King Crimson music. “Life is great,” he wrote.

Belew was one of the most popular members of King Crimson, who have turned over countless musicians since their formation in the late ’60s. Fripp, who founded the group, remains the only original member. Details are slim on what the new version of the band will look like, but Fripp says it will include three drummers.

The guitarist’s Facebook post ends with one final question about the King Crimson reunion: “What would you like to say to crimson fans about the new King Crimson?” Belew’s diplomatic reply: “My advice is to check it out and if you like it, support it.” Stay tuned on whether or not fans feel the same way.

This is actually a promising turn of events for me. I like a lot of what Belew did but I felt as if that version had run it's course by the middle of their second album together. That said, there are quite a few songs Belew did from Beat onward that I really like.

I hope for either a return to the classic brooding Crimso sound or something truly new and innovative. With these guys you never know.

Finally downloaded In the Court of the Crimson King and listened to tracks 2 thru' 4 (I already knew and loved tracks 1 and 5). Very interesting album. I particularly enjoyed I Talk To The Wind and Moonchild. Epitaph was not bad either but I think I need to warm up to it. Needs a few more listens.

I'm quite digging this jazzy classical rock fusion at the moment. I should get ELP's debut album next. I only know Lucky Man from that one pretty much. The others I've heard on Grooveshark at work a couple of times. But it's just not the same listening via online streaming.

"Crimson King" is an astounding piece.An absolute wonderland of many intriguing aural delights.I can tell from each and every facet of production and composition would indicate that these guys had some serious vision and the ability to express that vision in highly worthwhile fashion.The cover is considered one of the more classic ones from the psychedelic age.I had it once on CD,but this is the kind of thing I think I would prefer in original analog format,which is basically my sentiment towards just about all my
60's faves.The title track in my opinion is one of the all time great epic rock numbers,along with,dare I say it,Led Zep's "Stairway"."Talk To The Wind" and "Moonchild" are magnificently transcendental and quite evocative in their glorious serene natures."Court" is always a great suggestion for those who may be just beginning to delve into the musical renaissance of the times..................

Epitaph, to me, is the jewel of the debut album. Give it a try!

For me,I just really enjoy the general Gothic theme of the album,just as I enjoy much of the Goth put forth by Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull.The Goth flavor adds a most intriguing element to these sessions.Something that even if you're not particularly into to it too much,you have to admire the fundamental idea of experimentation that went on there...............

The Crimson certainly weren't afraid of heavy experimentation,ala Pink Floyd.Sometimes,implementing new and different ideas can flag a little,but when you think about it just for a sec,ALL of the big innovators had to have some balls to defy the established order of the industry sometime or we wouldn't have many many many great and classic recordings.This is something that goes all the way back to early rock and roll,when it was considered quite a bold move to combine country,R&B and Gospel.I've always been more into the innovators rather than the imitators...................
