Michael McDonald Rejoins Doobie Brothers for All-Star Country Album

The Doobie Brothers, with five-time Grammy winner Michael McDonald returning to the fold, will team up with some of country music’s biggest stars to re-record some of their biggest hits. The album will be released on an as-yet undetermined date in 2014.

Brad Paisley, the Zac Brown Band and Sara Evans are among those who will be contributing their talents to the disc. Paisley, Evans and Chris Young performed with the band last week (see the picture above) at Sony Nashville’s annual exclusive party for industry people aboard the General Jackson Showboat.

The project was spearheaded by Sony Nashville head Gary Overton, whose first-ever concert was a 1972 Doobies show in Phoenix. “Seeing the Doobie Brothers perform all those years ago was such a thrill for me,” he said via press release. “I loved their sound, and the enduring appeal and influence of the Doobies runs deep. Artists have been telling me how excited they are to be a part of this project, and that alone speaks volumes about the amazing heritage of music that the Doobie Brothers have created.”

Toby Keith, Jerrod Niemann and Love and Theft are some of the other names who have chosen their favorite Doobie Brothers songs for the album.

I'll admit I don't know much about The Doobie Brothers. I bought a greatest hits CD and loved it. Every time I go to the flea market I see a vinyl album of theirs' or two...or 3 XD. I do know this much though, I didn't really care for the McDonald era of the Doobie brothers but I am interested to see who this album turns out. When it comes out I'll see if I can find it on Spotify, and then if I like it enough I will buy it.

He has a soulful voice, but I preferred them without him.

I basically missed the classic lineup by only starting to listen to radio around 1975, but I too prefer that group.

Michael does perform with the band from time to time, so this isn't anything new. There apparently wasn't a lot of acrimony like there is in other bands with ex-members.

All-Star Country Album? :uh: The original Doobies had a blue grass sound at times and might be a good fit, but Michael McDonald seems way out of place IMO.

Planning on going to see them this summer when they do a big outdoor show on Long Island, sharing the bill with Peter Frampton. I like Michael McDonald, but he's hardly integrel to the original Doobies sound that everyone recognises and loves, in fact his arrival lead to one or two pretty odd soul/funk type records which were OK but hard to take for anyone brought up with the band's original sound. A Doobies C&W album of re-hash versions of their old hits? Keep an open mind I guess, but this is the sort of experiment that almost never works.
