Does Prog lack emotion?

I agree with your stament about Dark Side and Script. However not with Image. I detets the vocals from DT and a bit less the musical muscle flexing.

Fair play, that's preference. I will concede that Prog can involve quite a bit of showing off, but last I checked that's sometimes part of what we want from our favourite musicians.

If not, we'd all be wearing overalls, farting and politely listening to Phil Collins.

A bit of showing off is quite ok. But DT do it too much.

I'll paraphrase David St Hubbins in my answer to that..Well, I don't really think that too much can be assessed as of itself as being too much because what does too much feel like? It's like saying when you try to extrapolate the end of the universe, you say, if the universe is indeed infinite, then how - what does that mean? How far is all the way, and then if it stops, what's stopping it, and what's behind what's stopping it? So, what's too much, you know, is my question to you.

When you put 'too much' in your explanation it's difficult to put words to. It's a feeling. It sounds compressed and to busy for my ears. It gets irritating and it seems the melody is forgotten.

Phil is better known than LaBrie. LaBrie isn't a horrible vocalist......at least I don't think so. But I would rather listen to Phil ;)

If you are referring to Dream Theater I can totally relate. Not really a fan and they come off (musically and personally) as rather pretentious. However, to say there is no feel there is crazy especially in today's drab musical landscape.

I was indeed referring to DT. Prog metal to me is a combination that never worked to me. As much as I like prog and absolutely love heavy metal, listening to prog metal is a total pain in the backside. There are some local bands that claim they play progressive rock/metal with Dream Theater/Tool influences and so on, but after listening to some of their tracks they were nothing but a bunch of clueless guys playing typical deathcore/metalcore/whatevercore with only different time signatures, making everything sound like a wall of noise with no sense whatsoever.

I never quite got the 'Hate Phil Collins' thing. He did a bit of prog with Genesis, then entered a period in his life when he was clearly a supremely talented song writer and producer, not to mention singer. Oh... and he did a bit of acting as well! What a twat! :gig There has been talk of a Genesis reunion with both Phil and Peter Gabriel. Can't see it myself, but it would be great if it happened.

As much as I like Phil with Genesis, his solo stuff was almost always instant annoyance or just plain boring to the point of being like elevator music. My wife loves his voice and all that stuff so to each his own.
