wish I still had mine :uh:
At least you had the pleasure of having them. The only nit I have with gear from that era is the lack of detachable power cords. I have a thing for aftermarket ones.

Bruce, those 901's were heavily marketed. I never heard it. Seen them though... My only experience with the brand are those two cubes on top of each other that can be moved about. More of a compromise for those who don't like big honking monoliths on their living floors.

Another speaker that I think is being assembled locally is JBL if I'm correct. Not the most high fallutin' "audiophile" sounding [what is?] but man they are very good for just rocking the house. Not refined but more rough and tumble. Just for the hell of it, I demoe'd one at Frys and it was more than all that plus a bag of chips.

^Two separate tweeters, a midrange and two woofers. Bi-ampable too. If it was a car, it would be a muscle one that guzzles power like gas.

I should be saying this surprises me but I can't really can't.

So I got the Sherwood connected to the Martin Logan M40's. I have everything side by side, with the Sony Blu-ray connected to both the Onkyo and the Sherwood for easy coparo.

I can honestly tell you the 20 year Sherwood is out performing the Onkyo. Immediately I noticed that broad crystal clear mid and upper range of the M40's that I heard at the dealer come right out. It takes about half of the volume control to pump out crystal clear music using that Sherwood.

Honestly I wasn't totally surprised, what did surprised me was how much difference there was. I didn't expect such a significant change, and I think it goes to show what the old equipment and performance numbers were compared to what the majority of manufacturers are pushing out today.

So the Sherwood will be stayng connected to the M40's. It's just too good

Time Is On Your Side...

^If it takes half of the Sherwood volume control to surpass the Onkyo's clarity and quality then it speaks volumes on how superior the former's processing power is. It probably will be even better when the M40's are fully broken in if not already. Good to read for you as an owner that it is still functioning properly after two decades.

I am listening to it right now and its great. My wife told me it was a bit too loud, so I put something she likes to hear on :D some Live Molkie Cole.

The M40's are 4ohm rated and I think part of the story is that the Sherwood is excelling where the newer Onkyo equipment was just fighting to tread water. Certainly the Sherwood isn't shedding anymore heat that usual either, but I do want to watch that for a bit.

But man the mid to upper is expansive. I am enjoying this a lot.

Low ratings...

^Some receivers and amps are not rated to drive speakers less than 6 ohms. I don't know if components made two or three decades ago were even engineered to do as such. I would invest on a small cooling fan or two on top of the vents. I have four on top of my Parasound HCA-1206 that is paired with my Stats as they are also 4 ohms. It has fins to dissipate the heat but I just want to be cautious. Post a pic if you can Jim.

^ I agree George. No rating for 4ohm back then... figured I was gonna give it try and monitor it. I know that box well so if it heats up at all I'll know. But it's amazing its playing strong at 1/4 volume. And the low end is hands better than I could squeeze out of the Onkyo.

I think I am going to put some fans on it to be sure of it, I want to be sure I don't loose her.

I will post up a pic in a bit.

Here is it is. Sherwood receiver is in the upper left corner. It has a flip down panel to an equalizer. You can see where the Volume is as its playing right now and its loud. Right next to it is the Sony Blu-Ray. Bottom right is the Onkyo.

Not that impressive of equipment, but it does perform well for me though. The m40's are the leaders right now.

The Heat Is On...

Jim,

I bought all my fans from this seller. I vouch for the quality of his products. They pull the heat out of the component and blow it into the open.

Maybe you can find something of similar quality and a few bucks cheaper but check them out anyway. Your JVC S-VHS is similar to what I gave to my folks. :)

Most people can tell how good the amp section is of a component by how well it grips the woofers. Your Sherwood seems up to the task.

^^ George awesome thanks. I'm grabbing one tonight.

the Sherwood has pretty modest output wattage.... its a mere RV-1340R. But I have allways thought it sounded great though. It sticking to those woofers on the M40 really well, its picked it up well. It just like those 40's for some reason.

as for the JVC S-VHS, I have some tapes with hard to find concerts and music videos that played on late night TV in late 80's-90's. I never had them converted, and that JVC comes in handy. :grinthumb

Refresh my memory, but back when VHS and Beta were on top, one of them was used as a stereo recording media. Forgot which one , but I read they were second to none in sound reproduction.
