Last night had pre-amp on...turntable off. Pre-amp set to -10 volume. Power on the table and I hear a loud thump. Ugh... No damage done but... :uh:

That'll make you grit your teeth and wince. :uh:

I used to plug in my headphones years ago with my separate system and power off the system without the loudspeakers engaged, to avoid moments like that. Glad nothing was damaged.

Everything is OK peeps. It's odd but that never occurs when I use the pre-amp's own phono stage. That headphone trick Bruce? I think that would work as it disables the speakers when it is plugged in. I usually use the "mute' function. Another strange anomaly is that when the needle drops, I see the "red" overload light on my Parasound amp. It lasts for only a few seconds though.

Ran the studfinder on the wall above my fireplace. Really weird as the studs are off center where I can put on the mounts for the flatscreen. I don't think it would be too much of a hassle. For speakers, I have eight of the Mirage Omnisats:

I plan on mounting these on the ceilings pointing down at the listening area. The dispersion on them with their waveguide design is really good which makes them perfect for surround sound formats. Musically they might not have the muscle on the low end but that is where the subs are for. It will be interesting how they will sound altogether on "all channel stereo" mode. Some listeners are put off by the music coming from all around them and prefer just the front two but I don't mind and kind of like it.

^^Sounds like a major facelift to me George, hope it all works out for you when you're done.

I've played around with multi-channel 'stereo' for a while, honestly I prefer the different programs in my old Yamaha receiver, they sounded a lot better than the 6-8 channel stereo to me. But playing a multi-channel stereo signal for a house full of people would be fine, I'm pretty sure that's the reason they came up with it along with the 'main' and 'zone' functions to allow you multi-room flexibility.

I have a question about your Mirage's but don't want to offend you...:peek

Mirages

What question do you have Bruce? With their capabilities, there is a larger "sweet" spot than conventional box speakers. I am working on separating two systems for HT and two channel music.

^^Are they made by the 'old Mirage' company or the new one owned by Klipsch? At least I heard that Klispch bought the rights to Mirage. Just curious they used to be a really good Canadian company but those days are long over.

I have my systems separate one for movies and the vintage rig for two channel.

Old daze

They are all from the original Mirage company. I bought all eight from a Tweeter sale roughly nine years ago. Their shops were closing all over SoCal and were liquidating inventory. They were $50 a piece. You're right that Klipsch brought Mirage but they ceased production on them. The only seller I know that were offering Mirages was Vanns though they were going out of biz last year too.

Tested all of them...all functioning fine. Two will be for centers spaced wide for a larger soundstage.

^^Seems to be a theme the last decade, great old companies disappearing and the market being swallowed by a handful of Chinese based firms. (Bose anyone...?)

Glad you got yours' from the original company, they built quality into their stuff.

^^ I didn't know Bose had gone that way.

Honestly thou I never really liked the Bose approach. I always thought it was amazing what they could do to get sound to come from a small package.

But I think of them like I think of BMW's... Sure they're cool and everything, but it's still classic German over engineering to achieve similar results without such specific use cases.

but hey thats just me I guess :D
