Alien 4 is one of my personal favorites as far as post early space rock daze releases goes. One that I thoroughly enjoy but many people here seem to disagree. It is highly rated in many circles though.
It is a combination of their electronic soundscapes and mid paced space rock. The album revolves around band members feelings of alienation set to an alien abduction story line . Ron Tree is a bit of a strange frontman but then Hawkwind are a bit strange themselves, lol

Love In Space is my favorite later era live CD and ( especially) DVD.They were recorded during the Alien 4 tour. Great stuff IMO but it takes a bit of getting used to for the old Hawkfan

NIK TURNER'S SPACE RITUAL

Space Ritual claim to embody the true spirit of Hawkwind and, looking at the line-up, few could argue as apart from eccentric, innovative and enigmatic Hawkwind founder Nik Turner, the band also features another founder member, guitarist Mick Slattery, original drummer Terry Ollis, early keyboard player Thomas Crimble as well as bassist Jerry Richards who played guitar for Hawkwind in the 90's. A good start then…

It gets better. Back in the 70s, there was the lovely Stacia and in keeping with tradition we now have the petite, nimble and attractive Miss Angel, multiple costume changes and all.

However, this is very definitely not a pensionable bunch of old chaps reliving their (and our!) youth, this is a full-on two hours-plus choc full of classics including of course Brainstorm, Sonic Savages, Steppenwolf, Master Of The Universe and Silver Machine. Complete with effects, projections and lots of dry ice to take you the Space Rock Dimension, reliving the dawn of psychedelia.

This is a fantastic show and tickets will be at a premium, don’t delay!

The first time I heard Hawkwind was in 1972 when Silver Machine was released as a single. Along with Alice Cooper, Mott the Hoople and Roxy Music, they seemed like something from outer space, and in the case of Hawkwind, this was probably deliberate!

This is a discography of the studio work plus The Space Ritual, which was recorded live. There is other live material and compilations. I am familiar with those up to and including Sonic Attack. The first six are great, but all of the seventies and early eighties albums are pretty good. The critics hate Sonic Attack, but I ignore them!

My favourite Hawkwind album is Bob Calvert's solo project, Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters, which is a Hawkwind album in all but name. Lemmy plays bass, Dave Brock some guitar, Nik Turner Saxophone and Paul Rudolph (of Pink Fairies) plays various guitars. Between the music tracks are comedy sketches by Calvert, Viv Stanshall (Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band) and Jim Capaldi (Traffic). They are funny, but the music is fantastic.

An interesting point: Lemmy, in a TV interview, said he though Nik Turner was the best musician in the band. Actually, I think Lemmy was the best musician, as his bass drives the band along.

I have a couple of Nik Tuner's CDs : Space Ritual 1994 Live
and Prophets of Time. Though I guess they aren't technically Space Ritual CDs ..I like 'em both though. I would love to see them, Hawkwind, Bedouin, Spacehead, Mr. Quimby's Beard, Gunslinger etc..Live (in other words the UK Space
Rock scene ) but none of them ever tour over here

Nik Turner's Space Ritual looks more like Hawkwind than Hawkwind. Has Nik Turner left Hawkwind?

^^ Nik Turner left Hawkwind in 76 and then returned from 80 to 82 leaving again. Dave Brock and Alan Davey are basically the two main writers for Hawkwind these days and have been for quite sometime now.


BTW, I just ordered the latest release Leave No Star Unturned. It's a Live recording
that is supposed to be decent sound quality from 1972. I haven't got it yet but look forward to it making an appearance in my mailbox soon.

DISTANT HORIZON

This is another of the later era Hawkwind CDs that I own and like. It is a mix of the more trippy era kinda/ sorta Pink Floyd-ish Space Rock that Hawkwind is known for on some of their later releases, older era hard drivin' Hawkwind with some metal like riffage and a bit of the UK electronic influence. Once again if you are one of those people who worship early Hawkwind and refused to accept any change from the master musical course of said early period you are probably not going to like this one ..or even give it a chance at that. This is a CD for lightin one up and relaxing So if you are a bit more open to their later material I suggest you give the tracks below a listen. Some of my favorite tracks were not available at youtube...

I had to smile at the Lemmy quote that "Nik Turner was the best musician in the band"

A music fan friend of mine reckons that Nik Turner has never has been able to play his saxophone properly still after 45 years and just makes noises with it!!.
