It's amazing that they can ride so much feeling out of barely a lyrical presence and half the song topics are so random like "Man In The Box" and honestly as nice as the melodies sound it's hard to make out what they are saying without looking them up at some point. For example, my favorite "Nutshell":

We chase misprinted lies
We face the path of time
And yet I fight
And yet I fight
This battle all alone
No one to cry to
No place to call home

Oooh... Oooh...
Oooh... Oooh...

My gift of self is raped
My privacy is raked
And yet I find
And yet I find
Repeating in my head
If I can't be my own
I'd feel better dead

Oooh... Oooh...
Oooh... Oooh...

I like the way they connect and connect with the lyrics but I honestly find that they found the most base lyrics to convey the emotion and fit into the mood and melody they want. I tend to like bands that put a little more work into both sides though their are exceptions. I think this works fine with "Nutshell" as I liked it just fine hearing it as mostly as series of moans and Ooohs but this is a band I'll never quote or think much deeper about the content. I know the singer was trouble, depressed and addicted to drugs but that doesn't stand out much from the genre. I see them more for their harmonies than anything. :cheers2

 Fave song of all time. I listen to this whenever I'm sad/pissed off/emotional. It caresses my feelings quite well. And I agree with everyone saying AIC is the best band out of the 90's.

By far the best band out of the 90's. Sabbath and AIC are number 1 and 2 (respectively) on my favorite bands of all time list. Nutshell is amazing. I really like another song on Jar Of Flies and that is "Don't Follow." I get the same feeling you do when I listen to that song. It's beautiful.

BTW, Black Gives Way to Blue was a great album. Way better than I expected it to be. That's why I can't wait for their next record. I wish I was old enough to see the original AIC perform. Unfortunately I was 7 years old when they kicked Mike Starr (R.I.P.) out of the band so that was never going to happen. :(

Know how you feel, I missed out on all of those 90's legend concerts. And Black Gives Way is a great album, the material quite different than what they did in the 90's. I'm glad Jerry and the boys are still doing what they love without trying to replace Layne.

"Hopefully these songs will strike a chord and make a similar impact on all of you out there that were moved by this band in the first place."

I think they succeeded in that :grinthumb

I never really thought of AIC as grunge, even though they would be the definition of it. The murky guitar rifts of green river and nirvana, as well as the strong, symbolic vocals of eddie vedder (pearl jam) and chris cornell (soundgarden, Temple of the dogs) are just what i personally equate grunge as. just one kids thoughts... i do give a listen to Dirt from time to time. Them Bones sticks with you after a time :)

My first heard song by them was Rooster. Now like each their song.
