I agree with you for the most part, but I have to vehemently disagree with the concept that snobs are cool....

I suppose i'm more along the "hippy outlook" that you're talking about. Because I have to respectfully disagree with your opinion. My only beef with these sorts of lists is that it only focuses on the bands that are recognized by a large group of people. I'm talking like when someone says a bands name, everybody knows about or have heard that band. But, (here's where my hippy outlook comes in), does that give any underground artist a chance to even be recognized even a little bit by anybody? Not really. These lists continuously shower the bands that have already made it big, instead of introducing new artists and bands that deserve it just as much. Sure, I guess from a business point of view, the way they work these lists is smart. But it's so close minded that people are only getting like...10% of the good music that is out there right now. But if people want to be close minded, than more power to them.

Fair enough but to add to the fact that people in general are never happy when these artist like Laura Nyro who had a respectable contribution to music but are a little less known than these bigger name artist are added in with the marquee bands of that year everyone bitches about "Who the Hell is that and why are they in their first". I argue that there's no way that these guys are perfect with their selections but I think the order and balance makes sense. One or two to draw in the big crowds and get the other names in place at the same time. That way the marquee band draws it's fan base in each year and the handful of other fans are happy with the Laura Nyros of music getting in there without losing the drawing power of the overall event. If this event was going to end in 5-10 years than I could understand the rush even more but with something that's supposed to be a regular traditional event that will always be looking at all names and eventually inducting them I can't see them that far off the path of how an event like that should work. :grinthumb

I still think snubbing KISS is wrong. If it's about album sales, and concert sales they got it on top of the merch and marketing.

They inspired many artists with SOOO much more beyond 1 or 2 singles.

But even if they were recognized, I still probably wouldn't watch, except to see who from the camp would actually show up.

:heheh:

Article about HoF and Rory Gallagher. Explains very well why most of the bands are not yet in HoF.

Was this Rory Gallagher’s last chance at the Hall of Fame?

I LOVE the wording here and find it to be completely accurate

Sad that characters such as Iggy with no musical talent but a keen flair for the dramatic can be admitted to the Rock ‘n Roll “Hall of Fame” yet amazingly talented musicians such as Rory Gallagher can annually be denied.

I see what you're getting at. That's where the business side comes into play. They wouldn't attract as many people if they were to list names that nobody knows about. And I suppose I can see your point about it having to be a traditional thing each year. Who knows, some years it may be a surprise to some people which artists are being inducted or not. But yeah, I do agree that the order and balance makes sense from a business point of view.

I'd like to mention that the Hall of Fame does a decent job of picking out obscure songwriters and producers and such. Certainly a lot of people who would never have a dream of a chance if the Hall was voted on by the people, for better or worse. Not saying that it's right or wrong, just that it's a unique aspect of The Hall that other systems might not include. As far as obscure bands go... I agree you don't find many in the Hall...

I was thinking about it last night that I think in a few years, we'll start to see more of the obscure/underground artists being mentioned. Not saying artists that are so far obscure that nobody has heard of them, but I mean the artists that have had a pretty good career in the last 10 years, Porcupine Tree for instance. I think they deserve a chance in the next few years.

Well hey, seems to me all you crazies bring some pretty nifty ideas to the table. Cleveland's a big city. Plenty of room to drink and plenty of room to fight. We'll get this whole rock 'n roll thing settled in no time, so don't you go worrying your pretty little heads over it.
