Looks like everybody is lumping overrated together.. BUT, cant use overrated without using "Hype".. Some stuff is overrated of something thats completely different that doesnt have anything to do with hype, but on the other hand overrated and hype are so blurred together it would be extremely difficult to separated one from another...
Overrated but not hype:
For example... Ted Templeman and Jeff "Mutt" Lange did such a killer job on producing these albums that it was worthy in anybody collection for years to come.
Overrated with hype:
Then the other side is a lame ass slick scam to sucker you into the flavor of the month for no other reason then to get your money.
Then the last:
Overrated that succumb to hype:
Gun and Roses (among a long list) is a perfect example of this... "Welcome to the jungle" was and still is a killer tune, Slashs guitar solo is rock solid and something every guitarist would want for theirs... BUT then like everything in hype it gets far bigger then what it was connected to, wanna guess what happen when the bands ego (or certain members in the bands) had a superiority complex and selling themselves out to all their hype.. remember that concert on August 22, 1991 in St. Louis? That was basically the end of that band..
So list it again.. overrated with or without hype and for why...
Overrated:
to rate or appraise too highly; overestimate
Hype:
to create interest in by flamboyant or dramatic methods; promote or publicize showily
