Armor and Sword-Rush Touching upon how religion should be a good thing like a shield but instead it has been used as a sword. Nothing on this earth is responsible for more death. No one gets to their heaven without a fight.

The snakes and arrows a child is heir to
Are enough to leave a thousand cuts
We build our defenses, a place of safety
And leave the darker places unexplored

Sometimes the fortress is too strong
Or the love is too weak
What should have been our armor
Becomes a sharp and angry sword

Our better natures seek elevation
A refuge for the coming night
No one gets to their heaven without a fight

We hold beliefs as a consolation
A way to take us out of ourselves
Meditation or medication
A comfort ,or a promised reward

Sometimes the spirit is too strong
Or the flesh is too weak
Sometimes the need is just too great
For the solace we seek
The suit of shining armor
Becomes a keen and bloody sword

A refuge for the coming night
A future of eternal light
No one gets to their heaven without a fight

Confused alarms of struggle and flight
Blood is drained of color
By the flashes of artillery light
No one gets to their heaven without a fight
The battle flags are flown
At the feet of a god unknown
No one gets to their heaven without a fight

Sometimes the damage is too great
Or the will is too weak
What should have been our armor
Becomes a sharp and burning sword

Well Soot I know the Stranglers were a punk outfit in the beginning but one or two songs crossed over .. and there are dark themes.

Dailly Nightly (M. Mesmith writer)

Darkened rolling figures move thru' prisms of no color.
Hand in hand, they walk the night,
But never know each other.
Passioned pastel neon lights light up the jeweled trav'ler
Who, lost in scenes of smoke filled dreams,
Find questions, but no answers.

Startled eyes that sometimes see phantasmagoric splendor
Pirouette down palsied paths
With pennies for the vendor.
Salvation's yours for just the time it takes to pay the dancer.
And once again such anxious men
Find questions, but no answers.

The night has gone and taken it's infractions,
While saddened eyes hope there will be a next one.

Sahara signs look down upon a world that glitters glibly.
And mountain sides put arms around
The unsuspecting city.
Second hands that minds have slowed are moving even faster
Toward bringing down someone who's found
The questions, but no answers.

'Ghost Town' by The Specials just perfectly captures the doom and gloom feeling of the times over here in the early eighties - there was the hugely unpopular Thatcher Government, unemployment had gone throught the roof and riots were breaking out across the country.

Ben Folds is a great modern pop songwriter and while a lot of his work centers around eccentric characters and zany scenarios he has plenty of serious subject matter. How many pop radio hits do you know tackle unexpected pregnancy, the selfish thoughts invloved and abortion?

6 am day after Christmas
I throw some clothes on in
The dark
The smell of cold
Car seat is freezing
The world is sleeping and
I am numb
Up the stairs to her apartment
She is balled up on the couch
Her mom and dad went down
To Charlotte
They're not home to find us
Out
And we drive
Now that I have found someone
I'm feeling more alone
Than I ever have before

CHORUS:

She's a brick and I'm drowning
Slowly
Off the coast and I'm headed
Nowhere
She's a brick and I'm drowning
Slowly

They call her name at 7:30
I pace around the parking lot
Then I walk down to buy her
Flowers
And sell some gifts that I got
Can't you see
It's not me you're dying for
Now she's feeling more alone
Than she ever has before

Repeat Chorus

As weeks went by
It showed that she was not fine
They told me son it's time
To tell the truth
And she broke down and I broke
Down
'cuz I was tired of lying
Driving back to her apartment
For the moment we're alone
She's alone
And I'm alone
Now I know it

Repeat Chorus til end
