Is Van Halen a hair band?

Hair Band is a moronic term to begin with. Anyone I know who was a fan of that type of music never used that term. Bands falling under that category were just metal/hard rock to us. I guess a good term for the 80's bands would be "melodic metal."

Van Halen is hard rock/metal.

I agree with you. It seems like "genre labels" are made up and attached to bands retro-actively many years later. The "labels" really cause a stir some times. Want a label that cause a sh**storm? How about "prog?" ..LOL

Today Van Halen isn't considered heavy metal (same with AC/DC). They influenced the scene, the sound, the fashion but they were just raw, furious, guitar-driven ROCK AND ROLL!!!!!!

I really think VH kicked hard rock and metal in the ass.

They have that effect on me too. I always want to give whoever's responsible a good ass-kicking as soon as I hear them launch into the opening notes of "You Really Got Me", "Oh, Pretty Woman", "Jump", etc.

At least people don't have a problem coming up with a top 5 favorite list for Van Halen... if they don't it's only because they have a tough time narrowing it down to ONLY 5. Unlike certain 'garage bands' that people consider to be one-hit wonders.

I guess it depends on how you define "good."

I think Eddie Van Halen R-E-V-O-L-U-T-I-O-N-I-Z-E-D rock guitar in the late 70s. AC/DC and VH kept ROCK honest when a lot of other bands were wearing skinny ties and Ray-Bans.
