Re: Any King Crimson Fans in the House?

Just heard this earlier, and I gotta say it's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard:
Cadence & Cascade

:phones:

Excellant song there, Salmacis. It happens to be one of my most favourite songs from their Poseidon album. I read that they sped up Gordon Haskell's vocals for the studio track. I also have the version with Adrian Belew's vocals replacing Haskell's from their Frame By Frame box set. It's okay but I prefer Haskell's sped up vocals. :grinthumb

Not a huge fan but I have a few Crimson albums. Favorite is RED. I heard RED the first time 10 years ago. It knocked me on my a**. I also have "In The Wake Of Poseidon","Larks Tongues In Aspic" and this compilation:

Pretty good compilation of the first three Belew albums and almost all of In The Court Of The Crimson King.

I like KC, they are such a diverse band, you never really know what to expect when you play their albums, the only constant being Robert Fripp.

I have 10 of their CD's I think, I have never seen that compilation before Vic, looks like a good entry point for casual or new fans of KC.

The whole album is fantastic, but that song really stood out for me. I felt the same way for I Talk To The Wind, really wonderful music! :D

Yeah, I think it covers the two main phases of the band, but there's nothing from the Whetton era (which I think was probably their best era). It's a good comp though.

Big King Crimson fan here. What I like about them is that they're still finding ways to keep the music fresh and adventurous. It's too bad Robert Fripp does'nt get recognized for his talents. My most fave albums are Crimson King, Wake Of Poseidon, Islands, Larks', Bible Black, Red, Discipline, and ConstruKction Of Light.

Well to be honest, they haven't done much of anything in the fresh and new department since Power to Believe.

Elephant Talk is truly one of those revolutionary songs because of the wild things Adrian and Peter were doing on guitar... And my God, Tony's work on the Chapman Stick stopped me in my track. I went out and bought a legal copy of that track seconds after I heard it off my dad's tape. WHAT a song.
Kinda hard to believe that the King Crimson who brought you "Heartbeat" and "Elephant Talk" in the 80's evolved out of its Prog-Rock roots with "The Court Of The Crimson King" and "21st Century Schizoid Man" way back in the late 60's, huh?

"Heartbeat" - 1982

Then again, who would've thought that Bowie would embrace the dance/pop culture of the 80's after all his work in the early/mid 70's, followed by his "Berlin" trilogy?

hm actually no makes sense to me. Actually KC stayed true to its roots in Prog while some of their peers(Genesis and Yes) jumped to pop.

Re: Any King Crimson Fans in the House?

^^While I agree with you about Genesis and Yes moving towards more pop sounding music, I think KC did soften somewhat as well. If you play ITCOTCK and then Red, there is a definite change, let alone Lark's....or Lizard, that is why some fans who don't like prog as a rule make an exception for Red. That's not to say it's a sell out or anything, but if nothing else Robert Fripp is the most eccentric non-famous famous guitarist I know of and he likes it that way. I can't remember who he toured with years ago...but he played guitar off stage on a stool, and never came out for any applause after the show.

Red was released in 1974 and yeah it was a change but still completely under the prog umbrella just listen to Starless. The song Red is an instrumental which certainly makes it not poppy. I think Dave was talking about their 80's output(Heartbeat, three is a perfect pair, frame by frame) but like I said I don't think it changed much from their roots, they just had a singer in Adrian Belew who had come out of some other genres of music.

In regards to Fripp playing guitar off the stage on a stool and not coming out for any appause. That is sort of a myth, how do I know? Because I saw one of those shows. Fripp has been sitting at his concerts since the first tour of discipline let alone most of the 70's shows too. This recent tour he had his setup to the side and his soundscape units infront of him so he could reach them without turning around, therefore, he was blocked for most of the audience. I was in an area that was not block. Thruout the set Fripp was laughing(this was another knock, people said he was sterile) with Adrian and the drummers. When the band finished they came out front and Fripp did one of those hand gestures to the band so they could take all the applause. Fripp was giving the band the credit and he slowly stepped off stage. I saw nothing wrong with it.
