1-How big is it(cds,vinyl,downloads etc)

I have:
356 Lps
188 Cds
A handful of mp3 albums
50 Cds of mixed downloads, unfortunately most of them are mp3s.
513 lossless live shows, which takes up about 350gb of space on my HD.
About 80 some tapes, give or take a few
A handful of 45's
A handful of 8-tracks
15 concert DVDs

2-Is there stuff you have not played(how much)

I remember getting a huge stack of records from someone once . They were just going to trash them, so I took them. Some were great finds, some were not something I'd listen to or stuff I'd never heard of. But I kept them all.

3-Do you buy your music or do you take the odd frebbie download from blogs.

I mostly buy vinyl now. I've pretty much given up on cd's unless it's something I absolutely can't find on vinyl. I also download a lot of lossless live music.

4-How much per month do you think you spend
I don't buy stuff every month or I'd be broke! Once every few months I buy something

5-Is your collection out of control and growing like a monster

No, but it has gotten bigger in recent years.

6-How many chances do you give a purchase(eg 3 goes)

I don't buy music unless I've heard it before and I know I like it.

7-Do you have stuff that you do not like(eg part of a bands discography)

A dealer at a record show was so sure I'd like Cosmic Chicken by Jack DeJohnette that he gave it to me. The record isn't my type of jazz so I never listened to it again. Also I have records that are classic rock classics that I'm just not that into like the Stones Exile on Main St., Jefferson Airplane's After Bathing at Baxters and Chicago VII.

8-Do you sell off parts of your collection from time to time.

I had gotten rid of things when I was younger that I now regret so now I keep everything, even If I don't like it.

I started collecting when I was 14. Started out with tapes and making mixes from the radio. I always listened to vinyl because that's all my Dad had in the basement was a record player. I had bought a lot of vinyl in my late teens and early 20's but then got out of it for a while.
I started buying vinyl seriously again about 7 years ago.

1-How big is it(cds, vinyl, downloads etc)(Include display pics etc if you want.)
Over 1400 LPs. 1200 CDs. 60 DVDs. 60 cassette tapes. A few downloads. 120 bootlegs. Hundreds of hours of music taped from tv over the years. Hundreds of cd's and dvds from music magazines. Also have a collection of over 1000 magazines and about 50 rock books.

2-Is there stuff you have not played(how much)
Have listened to most of my music at least once. Some I listen to obsessively, either as an individual album or as an artist. I have recently bought a huge pile of CDs and LPs from two different deceased estates and I am slowly working my way through them. I probably have about 60 albums to listen to.

3-Do you buy your music or do you take the odd frebbie download from blogs.
I always try and buy the music.

4-How much per month do you think you spend
Depends what's available. I probably spend between $100 & $200 per month if there's a lot of good stuff around. I buy both new and second hand music.

5-Is your collection out of control and growing like a monster
Yes, sometimes. I need to build some racks for my cds and lps.

6-How many chances do you give a purchase(eg 3 goes)
I try to listen to an album at least once. If an album is highly reccommended, I'll play it a few times to see if I can "get it". Most times those albums are pretty rewarding.

7-Do you have stuff that you do not like(eg part of a bands discography)
Yeah. I sometimes buy an album for one track so the rest of the album is a waste. No band has a perfect discography so there are less favourite lps of favourite bands, if you understand what I'm saying. If I really don't like an album, I sell or trade it.

8-Do you sell off parts of your collection from time to time.
Occasionally when I run out of space, I will go through my collection and sell off a few that I don't really enjoy.

Started out with tapes and making mixes from the radio.

Good times. Hoping the DJ would STFU over the intro of the song. I found a couple of old cassettes I recorded off the radio from '81 and '84. I guess it's all nostalgia now hearing the old dj's and station promos.

Just noticed this thread ......
1-How big is it(cds, vinyl, downloads etc)(Include display pics etc if you want.)
*Never counted it so these are guesses but.....about 1,000 cds, about 1,000 vinyl including a few vinyl box sets and cd box sets.
no downloads...I'm old school

2-Is there stuff you have not played(how much)
*Not really....I have probably played all of it at least once

3-Do you buy your music or do you take the odd frebbie download from blogs.
* Most of it I have bought though a few years back a friend with a huge collection of obscure prog and psych burned onto cd over 200 albums for me of very hard to get or very expensive obscure things

4-How much per month do you think you spend
*Not much these days since I have most of what I want ....maybe $50-100 a month.
If I find rare prog or psych at a decent price I might go for it depending on what it is and if its old vinyl.

5-Is your collection out of control and growing like a monster
*No....not really but I have a large stereo room plus a big closet

6-How many chances do you give a purchase(eg 3 goes)
*I dont usually buy anything I'm not familiar with ...so I kind of know if it's something I will like
I try to listen to brand new things online first.

7-Do you have stuff that you do not like(eg part of a bands discography)
*A few things here and there but again I'm very selective about what I buy

8-Do you sell off parts of your collection from time to time.
* I will trade or sell if I get duplicates or want something bad enough to trade for it

1-How big is it?

Honestly I stopped counting 20 or more years ago. At one time I hand wrote my lists. Then I created computer files. Eventually I stopped both but kept collecting. I very easily have 1,500 lps, 1,500 cds, 200 cassettes, maybe 200 45 rpm singles.
And then there is a portable hard drive filled with digital files. I have no idea how many full albums or single tracks are on that. Numbers in the thousands. But I have most of the stuff I find interesting migrated into iTunes.

2-Is there stuff you have not played(how much)

Yes. There are a lot of digital files (albums) on this hard drive I am not interested in but my physical collection of lps and cds is mostly cycled through.

3-Do you buy your music or do you take the odd frebbie download from blogs.
Most of my lps, cds, singles, and cassettes; the physical collection, are things I have bought over the decades. I have a very small amount of downloaded files. The 1 tb hard drive full of music and movies is a shared project and these archives were free.

4-How much per month do you think you spend

None these days. As a music collector I’m out to pasture. No longer in the game of buying music, really.

5-Is your collection out of control and growing like a monster

It is very much in control now. Very, very little expansion. The empire no longer is at war.

6-How many chances do you give a purchase(eg 3 goes)

I will sometimes go back and listen again to albums I did not like at one time. I do believe in the chance to prove your value.

7-Do you have stuff that you do not like(eg part of a bands discography)

Of course.

8-Do you sell off parts of your collection from time to time.

Very rarely.

According to the database (CATtrax), today I have 19,039 records (all formats), with many more waiting to be listed. Number of individual tracks: 239,780.

Yes, there are lots of things I haven't heard, but I'm retired now. I was saving it for now.

All the records and an awful lot of CDs I bought.

I only buy albums by The Beatles and Paul McCartney anymore. The only spending I do is when there's a new release. Not getting the current Wings collection, it's nothing new, but I pre-ordered the Anthology box a couple of weeks ago.

Growing like a monster? Not anymore. It was already one of those years ago. I've always had more records than anyone I know.

I don't really give albums a chance, because I already have an idea what to expect.

I have the complete discography by quite a few groups, and some of those are hit-or-miss.

I've never sold a record. I just buy them.
