Dave Edmunds is Welsh. He had a UK Christmas Number 1 single in 1970 with Smiley Lewis's 'I Hear You Knocking' (which he came across while producing Shakin' Stevens and the Sunsets' first album A Legend). The recording was the first release on his manager's MAM Records label. This single also reached No. 4 in the US, making it Edmunds's biggest hit on either side of the Atlantic. It sold over three million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. Edmunds had intended to record Wilbert Harrison's 'Let's Work Together', but when he was beaten to the song by Canned Heat, he adapted the arrangement for 'I Hear You Knocking', creating a highly original remake.

I remember my dad buying our record player, along with I Hear You Knocking, for Christmas 1970, so it was one of my first ever records. I still love it. Edmunds gets a very full sound from very limited instrumentation.

Sorry Big Ears as I must of this missed this yesterday morning. Great info and story. "I Hear You Knocking" is just a great tune. I had no idea that it reached that high on the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. I haven't dug into Edmunds solo career at all though I remember having Rockpile's Seconds Of Pleasure in my hands a few times but it ended but back in the bin. Have both Love Sculpture's albums on vinyl. Forms And Feelings has a couple of hard rock tracks on it which I can't recall off the top of my head that could be considered (proto) metal.

A Man fan is seldom seen these days. Like you stated earlier, a great prog/psych band. They sound like they could of been from the west coast of the US (San Fran. or L.A.), especially thier first album. Rather eclectic and diverse from the albums I have heard. It's been some time since I've listened to any of thier stuff though I do remember Rhinos, Winos And Lunatics is my fav.

Thanks joe. I don't know much about the time zones, but you are probably 8 hours ahead of us?

If you like Man, Budgie and Dave Edmunds, all great by any standard, you would probably like Sassafras. Their most well known song is a version of Neil Young's Ohio, but they were a bit like a cross between Wishbone Ash and Status Quo. Their drummer, Congo Jones, was a member of Love Sculpture.
