When I was younger, I was always on the prowl for the next big "party" song. Of course this was back in the mixtape days (when a blank chrome cassette cost around 2 bucks).

I would skip around looking for the perfect 3 chord party tunes for the next great compilation.

Nowadays, I always listen to the tracks from start to finish first. And BTW, I don't buy digital downloads, only media that I can hold in my hands.

I'm usually a beginning-to-end kind of guy. This was especially true when I had the liberty of purchasing and listening to records, which I find much easier to listen to from start to finish than digital formats.

Nowadays, being poor and record player(and record)-less, I try to listen to full albums as often as possible, but I'll often end up picking and choosing tracks.

I listen to a new album from start to finish, and then usually keep playing it (unless it's a real stinker!) for the next week or so to fully appreciate it. Then I add my favourite songs from the album to my mp3 player.

This, always, regardless of whether I've heard any songs from the album before or not. I like to listen to it a few times to familiarise myself with each song, but for some strange reason I find I only like the first half of many albums I listen to, regardless of band or genre, once I know it well enough. When this happens and I want to listen to the album, I'll usually just listen to the songs I like and then find something else to put on.
