I try to take time to listen to the album without any distractions, and that usually means either late at night with headphones on and lights dimmed, or preferably on a road trip home late at night. So much easier to really listen that way.

I grew up doing that myself Whaler, before I had a good stereo with nice speakers to listen to an album.

I have been buying a lot of albums over this past 16 months,I now have an awful lot of albums that I have only heard once or twice,I think doing this is wrong, you need to listen to an album 4 or 5 times to really hear it properly, the amount of times that I have listened to an album once and thought ''I don't like this'' or it was just ''OK'',only to then listen to it a few times more and then really loved the album is criminal. I am going to slow down on my purchases and get to know each album a bit better before I move onto another.I also have a backlog of around 50 boots that I haven't heard yet.

With LP's the first thing I used to do was fire up the Nac and tape the thing, but nowadays I rip it, CD copy and MP3 it .....
backin the day I used to drive around w/ 100's of tapes in the back....

I think time is the key, so whenever I get a new album I like to have plenty of time to play it through maybe a couple of times at first. After the initial listenings it gets put into the collection and I will play it as often as possible until I am familiar with it.

^^Exactly, patience and really Listening to a new album is the key for me. Also I like to "neglect" great old albums for a while and then play them and almost relive the first time I listened to it.

Like Yes's classic "Fragile", haven't played it for ages but put the CD on last night and was blown away all over again.

^I do that sometimes as well. When I know an album is great, and I know every song is amazing. I'll listen to it rarely so that I get the full experience every single time.

^^ Good one I usually do it by accident or should I say unintentionally but yeah I know what you mean. Then there's the steady growers that don't make much of an impression at first but over time become firm favourites.

I always play it from start to finish, then go back and check out the songs I like. I've always done that even in my younger days.

By the way, What's up with the poll?
