Just because they don't like it doesn't mean you have to do the same.
Pantera are a band who deny ever making albums prior to Cowboys from Hell but the fact is they did.
Def Lep can deny their first couple of records were good but I still love them :D

I love their first album. Def Lep's best album in my opinion.

An art dealer (this story is authentic) bought a canvas signed "Picasso" and travelled all the way to Cannes to discover whether it was genuine. Picasso was working in his studio. he cast a single look at the canvas and said: "It's a fake."
A few months later the dealer bought another canvas signed Picasso. Again he travelled to Cannes and again Picasso, after a single glance, grunted: "It's a fake."
"But cher maitre," expostulated the dealer, "it so happens that I saw you with my own eyes working on this very picture several years ago."
Picasso shrugged: "I often paint fakes."

Johnny Ramone didn't like some of the Ramones 80's output because they were too poppy.

Their 70's period was untouchable, but some of my all time favorite Ramones tracks were from the 80's.

My Brain is Hanging Upside Down, The KKK Took My Baby Away, etc.

Jimi Hendrix hated "Axis: Bold as Love" but I still love that album nonetheless.

Robert Plant bags on all kinds of Zeppelin stuff, for example....
I just recently read that Plant didn't like "Achilles Last Stand" because he felt it was too "heavy metal"... An odd comment though I think most of what he says is tongue in cheek. Page did not like "All My Love" labeling it as a "soft" which is a personal paen by Plant to his lost son. Coincidentally, I like both songs. Now if they said "Living Loving Maid (She's Just A Woman)" was un-memorable [to put it kindly] then yes, I would agree with them.

I love 'Creep' by Radiohead. But both band and fans hate it. Because it's too depressive, too mainstream, I don't know. They hardly every play it live and it is constantly trashed by the band, they continually dismiss their first album, which is probably my favourite Radiohead album and the only one I phisically own. But it's such a strong and universal song and I think everyone can relate. It talks about how sometimes you like this perfect person, that seems so out of your league, because you're just a weirdo. And I don't know, it may be kind of depressive, but everyone has been through that.

And I also know a lot of people hate Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da, which is one of my favourite Beatles song. I understand some may not like it, but it's not a bad song, it's so much fun to hate it. I know Lennon hated it, don't know about Ringo and Harrison. But when McCartney played it live, it was pure bliss.

What the artist says may make me look at the song or album and examine it to see maybe what they are talking about to understand their perspective, but aside from that I don't really let it influence me. I do agree with Billy though. We Didn't Start the Fire is defintely not one of his best songs. And I listen to his entire catalogue.
