Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has told TeamRock that he'd like to collaborate with iconic Welsh singer Tom Jones. Back in the 1980s, a UK rock magazine ran a spoof news story claiming that Jones, most famous for his 1960's mega-hits Delilah, What's New Pussycat? and The Green, Green Grass Of Home, had been lined up to front Black Sabbath

The suggestion was that the new-look Sabbath would take a concept album based on a mythical monster visiting a Welsh pit village on the road, for the Minotaur/Miner Tour. Though the story was a joke, it sparked a conversation between Iommi and Jones which led to a friendship blossoming between the two men.

"I've met Tom a few times and we were talking one day and he said 'Did you ever see that thing in the press about me joining you guys?'" Iommi reveals. "I said 'Yes, I did' and he said 'It's not a bad idea, is it?'"

"I like Tom, he's good," Iommi adds. "I'd actually like to do something with him. It could work."

Not sure if this is really news, or just silliness, but I'd listen.

If Tony wants to do that, then why not! That being said, I am not a fan of Tom Jones, although I do own "Reload", the album where he collaborated with several artist like The Cardigans, James Dean Bradfield, Cerys Matthews, Portishead etc!

@foreverblue: Agree about Iommi solo albums!

That is exactly the thought that popped into my head reading this thread :heheh:

I like Tom Jones, I like Sabbath and Iommi too but can't imagine what kind of collaboration would come from them getting together. Sort of like Eddie Van Halen recording with Michael Jackson on Thriller, Quincy Jones managed to bury his unique sound completely and unless I read the liner notes would never have guessed Eddie was on the album.

Neither band would have been the same. Sabbath wouldn't have existed. The world would be worse off for it.

But then I like the Mick Abrahams line up better than any other one so what do I know?

Indeed, from what I can gather from Iommi's excellent autobiography, the move and wage he was offered with Jethro Dull was made as though it was some great privilege and he should be honoured to take it, whereas Tony wanted to be an equal entity and knew he could make it on his own with his old band Black Sabbath. Thanks God!
