1985 David Byron, singer with Uriah Heep died from an epileptic fit and liver disease aged 38. Byron was the original singer of the English band between 1969 and 1976 and gained a reputation with his operatic vocals and harmonies as one of the best rock vocalists and frontmen in the world.

This Day In Rock History: Feb 28th


1942 Rolling Stones founding member Brian Jones is born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England. He is the group's leader early on, but dies in 1969 at age 27.

1957 Cindy Wilson is born in Athens, Georgia, where along with her brother Ricky and three other friends, she forms The B-52s.

2006 Bruce Springsteen releases Hammersmith Odeon London 1975.

2008 Mike Smith (lead vocalist, keyboardist for The Dave Clark Five) dies of pneumonia at age 64.

This Day In Rock History: February 29th


2012 Davy Jones, the Manchester-born lead singer with 60s band The Monkees, died aged 66, in his sleep at his home in Florida after suffering a massive heart attack. Jones who appeared as a teenager in soap opera Coronation Street, playing Ena Sharples's grandson was also a former apprentice jockey in Newmarket. Jones remained a keen horseman all his life, winning his first race in England as a jockey in 1996.

1968 Johnny Cash marries June Carter of the gospel stars The Carter Family.

1927 Harry Belafonte is born in Harlem, New York, but at age 8 moves to Jamaica (his mother's birthplace) with his family. The Belafontes move back to New York in the early stages of World War II; in the '50s, Harry becomes a top entertainer, his career buoyed by the calypso craze.

1977 Sara Lowndes Dylan files for divorce from her husband of eleven years, Bob Dylan. The divorce is granted in June and she is given custody of their 5 kids and possession of their million-dollar home. Sara was the subject of such songs as "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands", "Lay Lady Lay" and "Sara".
