This Day In Rock History: November 21st



1995, Legendary manager of Led Zeppelin Peter Grant died from a heart attack aged 60. Known as being one of the shrewdest and most ruthless managers in rock history, Grant secured 90% of concert gate money and intimidated record store owners who dealt in bootlegs. The former wrestler, also worked as a film extra and bodyguard. During the early 60’s Grant worked as a tour manager for Bo Diddley, The Everly Brothers, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent and The Animals.

2003, An acoustic guitar on which the late Beatle George Harrison learned to play fetched £276,000 at a London auction. His father originally bought the Egmond guitar for Harrison for £3.50. Another item auctioned was a signed invitation to the post-premiere celebrations for The Beatles Hard Days Night film, which went for £17,250.

1940 Blues musician Dr. John is born Malcolm John Rebennack Jr. in New Orleans, Louisiana.

1980 Steely Dan releases Gaucho. The album is meticulously produced and features contributions from Rick Derringer and Mark Knopfler.

1995 Bruce Springsteen releases The Ghost Of Tom Joad.

2017 David Cassidy dies at age 67 after suffering liver and kidney failure. The Partridge Family star made headlines earlier in the year when he was diagnosed with dementia.

1950, Born on this day, Steven Van Zandt, (Little Steven or Miami Steve), guitarist with South Side Johnny, then Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band and Little Steven and The Disciples of Soul. Created music-industry activist group Artists United Against Apartheid as an action against the Sun City resort in South Africa, Springsteen, U2, Bob Dylan and Run DMC, collaborated on 'Sun City'. Starred as Silvio Dante in the TV Series 'The Sopranos'.

1997, INXS singer Michael Hutchence was found dead in his hotel suite in Sydney. He was 37. Hutchence body was found at 11.50am naked behind the door to his room. He had apparently hanged himself with his own belt and the buckle broke away and his body was found kneeling on the floor and facing the door. It had been suggested that his death resulted from an act of auto eroticism, no forensic or other evidence to substantiate that suggestion was found.

2004, Ozzy Osbourne struggled with a burglar who escaped with jewellery worth about £2m from his Buckinghamshire mansion. Osbourne told reporters that he had the masked raider in a headlock as he tried to stop him. The burglar broke free and jumped 30 ft from a first floor window. A large amount of jewellery was stolen in the raid in which two burglars were involved.

1942 Floyd Sneed (drummer for Three Dog Night) is born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

1947 Rod Price (lead guitarist for Foghat) is born Roderick Michael Price in Willesden, North London, England.

1968 The Beatles release their ninth album, The Beatles aka The White Album.

2003: ZZ Top performed the final concert at The Summit in Houston, TX, the group’s hometown. Their first concert at The Summit was in November 1975.

2006: After living in the U.S. since the mid 1970’s, Fleetwood Mac drummer Mick Fleetwood became a U.S. citizen in Los Angeles.

1899

The world's first jukebox, then known as a "nickel in the slot machine," was installed at San Francisco's' Palais Royal Hotel. It had been created by simply adding a coin slot to an Edison phonograph. The machine had no amplification and patrons had to listen to the music using one of four listening tubes. In its first six months of service, the machine earned over $1000.

1974

The band Spooky Tooth split up after releasing seven albums since 1968. At various times, the group included Gary Wright (who would have solo success with "Dreamweaver" and "Love Is Alive"), Mick Jones (later with Foreigner), Chris Stainton (who went on to work with Joe Cocker), and Henry McCullough. (recruited by Paul McCartney And Wings) The British band never charted in their home country, but gained modest success in the US.

1954 Bruce Hornsby is born in Williamsburg, Virginia

1970 Cat Stevens releases Tea For The Tillerman.

1970 George Harrison releases "My Sweet Lord."

1991 Queen frontman Freddie Mercury issues a statement confirming that he has AIDS and calling for help in fighting the disease. Mercury would die the next day.

This Day In Rock History: November 24th


1991, Eric Carr (Paul Charles Caravello) drummer with KISS died aged 41, of complications from cancer in a New York hospital. Carr replaced Peter Criss in 1980 and remained a band member until he became ill in 1991. For his Kiss stage persona, Carr was known as 'The Fox.'

1991, Freddie Mercury died of complications from aids at his home in London's Holland park aged 45, just one day after he publicly admitted he was *** positive. Mercury was openly bisexual and enjoyed a colourful rock star lifestyle. During his career with Queen he scored over 40 Top 40 UK singles including the worldwide No.1 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.
