1969, Janis Joplin was arrested during a gig in Tampa, Florida, after badmouthing a policeman and using vulgar and indecent language. Joplin became upset after police moved into the hall forcing fans to move back to their seats. As the singer left the stage she confronted a detective calling him 'a son of a bitch' and told him she would kick his face in. She was released on $504 bail.

1987, Dire Straits became the first act to sell over three million copies of an album in the UK. Brothers in Arms contained five, top 40 singles: ‘Money for Nothing,’ ‘So Far Away,’ ‘Walk of Life,’ ‘Brothers in Arms’ and ‘Your Latest Trick.’ The album is the eighth-best-selling album in UK chart history.

1949 Steve Fossen (bassist, percussionist for Heart) is born.

1972 Harry Chapin's son Josh is born, which gives him a new appreciation for the poem his wife Sandy wrote (about her ex-husband) called "Cat's In The Cradle." Harry puts music to the poem and it becomes his biggest hit.

1974 Nickelback front man Chad Kroeger is born in Alberta, Canada.

1974 John Lennon's "Whatever Gets You Thru The Night" hits #1. Elton John, who sang and played piano on the track, had bet Lennon that it would hit the top spot. As the bet's loser, Lennon has to join Elton on stage at a Madison Square Garden concert, which he does on November 28 to a manic ovation.

1966, Born on this day, Dave Kushner, American musician best known as the rhythm guitarist for Velvet Revolver. Kushner has also been a member of Wasted Youth, Electric Love Hogs, Loaded, Danzig, Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro's solo band Sugartooth.


2002, Texan multi-billionaire David Bonderman hired The Rolling Stones to play at his 60th birthday party held at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. The bands fee was £4.4m.

1937 Gerry McGee (lead guitarist for The Ventures) is born in Eunice, Louisiana.

1938 Gordon Lightfoot is born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

1944 Gene Clark (tambourine player, guitarist, vocalist for The Byrds) is born Harold Eugene Clark in Tipton, Missouri.

1946 Martin Barre (guitarist for Jethro Tull) is born in Kings Heath, Birmingham, England.

1979 John Glascock (bass guitarist for Jethro Tull) dies at age 28 of a congenital heart valve defect paired with an infection from an abscessed tooth.

1980 John Lennon releases Double Fantasy. A few weeks later, he is shot and killed, and the album quickly goes to #1 in many countries.

2017, Australian musician and songwriter Malcolm Young died age 64. Young was best known as a co-founder, rhythm guitarist, backing vocalist and songwriter for AC/DC. Except for a brief absence in 1988, he was with the band from its November 1973 beginning until retiring permanently in 2014. Young was born in 1953 in Glasgow before his family emigrated to Australia when he was 10. His family confirmed he was suffering from dementia in 2014.

1968

An L.A. based quartet made up of Randy Meisner, Jim Messina, Richie Furay and Rusty Young, who called themselves Pogo, debuted at The Troubadour. After building up an local following, they would be forced to change their moniker, which they had openly pilfered from Walt Kelly's comic strip of the same name, when Kelly filed suit. They settled on Poco because it sounded like the original name that fans had come to know.

1995

The Rolling Stones become the first act to broadcast a concert over the Internet.
