This Day In Rock History: October 8th

1965: Manfred Mann’s second British album, Mann Made, was released in the UK. Released a month later in the US as the group’s fourth American LP, it was the group’s final recording project with original members Mike Vickers and Paul Jones, as well as their last to be recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London before switching to Fontana Records.

1991: John Mellencamp released Whenever We Wanted, his eleventh studio album and first to be credited to his real name without his former “Cougar” stage name.

2002: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released their eleventh studio album, The Last DJ. The album marked the return of bassist Ron Blair, albeit late in the recording process.

1971, Led Zeppelin II was enjoying its 100th week on the UK album charts. It was the band’s first album to hit No.1 in the US, knocking The Beatles’ Abbey Road twice from the top spot, where it remained for seven weeks. When first released the album had advance orders of 400,000 copies in the USA, (the advertising campaign was built around the slogan “Led Zeppelin II Now Flying.”) In 1999, it was certified 12 times Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for US sales in excess of 12 million copies.

1973 Elvis and Priscilla Presley are granted a divorce after six and half years of marriage. She is given property along with $725,000 and an additional $4,200 a month for the support of their five-year old daughter, Lisa Marie. The settlement also includes half the proceeds from the sale of an L.A. home and five percent of the total outstanding stock in two publishing companies. The couple emerge from a Santa Monica, California courthouse arm in arm, kiss and depart separately. Elvis was later quoted as saying, "Sad thing is... you can still love someone and be wrong for them." In 2015 Priscilla would look back at her marriage to Elvis and say, "He was the father of my child and I learned so much from that man. I'm not saying that everything was wonderful, marriages have problems, and especially in that Rock 'n' Roll environment, but we had an amazing bond."

1988 - Cliff Gallup, the lead guitarist for the Rockabilly group Gene Vincent And The Blue Caps, suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 58. He had played on Vincent's biggest hit, "Be-Bop-A-Lula" in 1956, but left the band later that year, not wanting to tour. At the time of his death he was working as the director of maintenance and transportation for the Chesapeake, Virginia, city school system. At the request of his family, obituaries in local newspapers made no mention of his time with Gene Vincent.
