1945 Brian Connolly (lead singer for Sweet) is born in Govanhill, Glasgow, Scotland.

1947 Brian Johnson (lead singer for AC/DC) is born in Dunston, Gateshead, England.

1951 Sir Bob Geldof (lead singer for The Boomtown Rats) is born in Dún Laoghaire, Ireland.

1961 David Bryson (guitarist for Counting Crows) is born in California.

1970 Led Zeppelin releases Led Zeppelin III.

1968: “Magic Carpet Ride” by Steppenwolf entered the Billboard Hot 100 on its way to reaching #3.

1973: Genesis released their fifth studio album, Selling England by the Pound. It became the band’s first top 10 album in the UK, reaching #3, as well as their first album to chart in the US, where it peaked at #70.

1984: The J. Geils Band released their eleventh and final studio album, You’re Getting Even While I’m Gettin’ Old. It was the band’s only album recorded without singer Peter Wolf. A majority of the album’s lead vocals were provided by keyboardist Seth Justman.

1973 Elton John released his seventh studio album, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. It became John’s best-selling studio album and features some of his best-loved songs, including “Candle in the Wind,” “Bennie and the Jets,” and the title track. Ranked as one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time by Rolling Stone, the record was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003.

2019 Peter Edward "Ginger" Baker, drummer for Rock's first supergroup, Cream, died after a short illness at the age of 80. Although they were only active between 1966 and 1968, the trio of Baker, Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton churned out three albums, "Fresh Cream", "Disraeli Gears" and "Wheels of Fire". A fourth and final LP, "Goodbye", was released in February 1969, months after the group had broken up. Three of their singles made Billboard's Top 40, "Sunshine Of Your Love" (#7), "White Room" (#6) and "Crossroads (#28). In 1993, Baker was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as part of Cream.

2019 - Larry Junstrom, a founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd and longstanding bassist with the band .38 Special died at the age of 70. Junstrom played bass with Lynyrd Skynyrd from its formation in 1964 until he was replaced by Leon Wilkeson in 1971. He then joined .38 Special in 1976 with Donnie Van Zant, the younger brother of the Lynyrd Skynyrd frontman Ronnie Van Zant.

1964 Matthew Sweet is born Sidney Matthew Sweet in Lincoln, Nebraska.

1994 Glenn Frey has stomach surgery for diverticulitis, causing the Eagles to postpone dates on their their Hell Freezes Over tour, which resumes in January.

2016 Prince's Paisley Park compound opens to the public.

2020 Van Halen leader Eddie Van Halen, widely hailed as one of the greatest guitarists who ever lived, dies of throat cancer at 65.

2020 American singer-songwriter Johnny Nash died of natural causes age 80. He is best known for his 1972 hit 'I Can See Clearly Now'. Primarily a reggae and pop singer, he was one of the first non-Jamaican artists to record reggae music in Kingston.
