This Day In Rock History: October 3rd

1949 Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac is born in Palo Alto, California.

1954 Stephen "Stevie" Ray Vaughan is born in Dallas, Texas.

1962 Tommy Lee (drummer for Motley Crue) is born Thomas Lee Bass in Athens, Greece.

1978 At an Aerosmith show in Fort Wayne, Indiana, cops arrest fans for smoking marijuana, prompting Steven Tyler to chastise them Jim Morrison-style from the stage. Tyler announces that the band will bail out anyone who is arrested that night, and the next day they do just that. Understandably, memories of the event are hazy, and the number arrested has been reported at anywhere from 28-58.

1973: After Stephen Stills and Manassas were booked to perform at the Winterland Arena in San Francisco, surprise guests David Crosby and Graham Nash joined Stills onstage. After four songs, Neil Young emerged, leading to the first Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young performance in over two years. Songs played by the group that night included tracks they had recorded earlier that year for an album that was never released.

1999: David Bowie released his twenty-first studio album, Hours. It was the first complete album by a major artist available to download over the Internet, preceding the physical release by two weeks.

1980 - Fleetwood Mac members Mick Fleetwood, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks join the USC Trojan Marching Band, which performed on their hit "Tusk," during halftime of the football game between USC and Arizona State. Nicks twirls a baton, Fleetwood plays a bass drum, and Buckingham mock conducts as the band plays the song. The USC band is then presented with a platinum record for their contribution.
