I've got a couple of albums which gather together their heavier album tracks and b-sides:

Hard Centres: The Rock Years

and

The B-sides

Both are quite rare. For some strange reason, Sweet would release singles with pop fluff on the a-side and heavy rock on the b-side. They only really became consistent with Level Headed, which ironically was their last album with the regular lineup.

Around the time of Level Headed I visited a wine bar a few times (remember wine bars?), which was frequented by Brian Connolly. He was quiet and sat at the bar drinking lager. He had a few hangers on, including a burly person with a beard, who apparently was his manager. Poseuers tended to frequent the bar and gather round Brian, but he was not full of himself. His untimely death was very sad.

Great story, hangers on are a nightmare IMHO.

(Andy Scott's) Sweet has released 5 albums since 1992 and now a new album, Full Circle, is in the pipeline.

Looks like only a new drummer since the 2020 album.

Sweet - Burning Like A Falling Star (today)

Sweet - Don't Bring Me Water (Jan.2023)

Ages ago, a friend and I would exchange mix tapes. One of his mix tapes was a Sweet Greatest Hits sort of compilation. I was familiar with Sweet and knew many of the songs but it did spark interest and I grew to like most of the songs. Flash forward a half a dozen years, and I transferred the cassette to a cd for listening options. I also bought Desolation Boulevard and another compilation album. This compilation album and the many others that can be found on streaming services have some songs that are just a little different than the original mix tape versions of which I have grown fond. Then of course there are always the re-recordings that are always horrible and sad.
So, I do like Sweet.

The Sweet I personally see them as one wrung behind Queen, I mean seriously Sweet F.A, Desolation Boulevard, Give Us A Wink… if their cheap bubblegum pop past hadn’t existed this band could have been serious contenders for rock royalty. As it is they are sadly relegated to being an influence in bands that were far more successful.

Personally I love Queen, they are one of my two equal favourite bands, but is it possible they may have just taken a slight hint of the Sweet’s vocal harmonies and went “yeah let’s do that but make it even bigger.”

Please join me in celebrating this often dismissed band, especially the musicianship of Andy Scott and Mick Tucker, when we talk guitarists and drummers they are never mentioned but I seriously feel that is a huge Miss Demeanour!

What’s your fave Sweet song/Album?
