I like a lot of the bands that have been named as overated and even I agree some of them are, I actually think its different saying a band is overated to disliking it.
I admit I overate a ton of bands I listen to. Doesnt mean I plan to stop talking about them either

Its a common misconception really, overated means something is getting more praise then it really needs or deserves but again it comes down to a personal opinion. When it comes to albums, is when Im more likely to pipe up about being under or overated, to me when an album gets overated it does take away from what is their overlooked work, common among my favourite bands.
Take ac/dc, the albums most people associate are Highway to Hell and Back in Black, which to some degree do get overated compared to underated and often overlooked work like Flick of the Switch and Ballbreaker.
Metallicas the same, I find Master of Puppets talked about all the time, I find that album extremely overated.

Too many to mention. Here's a quick list though, with a few comments for the peanut gallery:

  • Nirvana - most overrated and overhyped group of no-talent hacks in the history of music.
  • U2 - had a few decent tunes in the 80's. How they survived this long on anything and everything they've done since Josh Tree is beyond me.
  • Radiohead - Complete garbage, most boring shit I've ever heard in my life. I'd rather listen to boy bands or 90's pop-country than this crap.
  • Neil Young
  • Bob Dylan
  • David Bowie
  • Bruce Springsteen - Other than Born in the USA, I'd never listen to another one of his albums.
  • Tori Amos - I honestly have zero clue what the attraction to her is. Bleh
  • Sex Pistols - RnRHOF after 1 record? C'mon Another group of no-talent hacks that deserve to be erased from the anals of music history!
  • Tool
  • The Ramones - another truly crappy band, but compared to the sex pistols, these guys were the Beatles and Stones put together.
  • The Pixies - Absolute garbage, possibly the worst band ever.
  • The Smiths - More garbage
  • Nine Inch Nails
  • Grateful Dead
  • Audioslave / Rage Against the Machine (same shit isn't it?)
  • Muse
  • Coldplay
  • System of a Down
I better stop. And for anyone who likes any of these bands, it's not a slam at you. If you like them, that's great. I'm just sharing my own 2 copper pieces, nothing more.

They're the same in the same way a coconut is the same thing as a pineapple. They're both coming from similar places but there are big differences between the two.

The question is, overrated by whom? Is it the lists that various entertainment sites post? Is it by reviewers? Is it by record sales and ticket sales? Or just by members of music forums?

Exactly, my guess it its a bit of them all
The only time something being overated bothers me is when thats all that gets talked about regarding a band.

I don't really think about this topic much except when in a music forum.

Exceptions would be,,,"Britney Spears",,,"The Jonas Brothers" and now "Bieber Fever", they get so much exposure due to the machinery behind them that when you compare what music, and I am using the term loosely...:D, they have created versus the amount of chat/buzz about them then I dismiss them completely and conclude they are extremely "overrated".

It's all just fun really, I don't take subjects like this too seriously, certainly nothing to get me angry about no matter who says what about bands I love.

Hmm, my overrated list :

U2
Metallica
Coldplay
Sex Pistols
The Radiohead
and ofcourse mainstream MTV scene

U2, for me, is washed-out dull pop. They're not so creative, they don't move standards of music and they don't have almost any larger impact except staying in the top-chart-friendly zone until crowd get used to them. And I hate Bono's voice although he is really a great man. Metallica - I even like few tunes but there are more important heavy metal artists that doesn't earn a credit. Coldplay & Radiohead - for me, really lame ass music. Whiny, without that music "epicness" and joy to keep me interested in song more than 2 seconds.
