I spent most of this past day just sitting around listening to my old Cars records. It was like reliving a little piece of my childhood, and it was warm and fantastic . . . and I couldn't help but wonder:
The band kept a consistent line-up. Two of the guys shared lead vocals.
With a bit of a colder, paranoid punkish type of vibe, Ric Ocasek.
With a bit of a warmer, traditional rock type of voice, Benjamin Orr.
Usually only fans, or even sometimes new fans, can tell the difference between the two. I'm thinking if you've opened this thread, you probably know what I'm talking about, but I really want to post a couple videos, stick a poll up, and let everyone have at it.
Since I'm tired of all the typical videos everyone always posts, associated with these guys, here's a couple little goodies from the "Shake it Up" record.
Ric's vocals on "A Dream Away" (live in Houston, 1984)
(ArghghhH!!! Check out Ben's awesome shades. Sigh, he was just cool. Poor Ric looks like he's going to fall asleep.)
Ben's vocals on "Cruiser" (live, c. 1982)
(Is it just me or do all the guys kind of look sedated here?)
I love both of these guys. My heroes, growing up, definitely. I was heartbroken when Ben passed, and I'm possibly hopelessly in love with Ric.
Take your pick. I'm torn. ;D
By the way, here's a little something I stumbled across:
I'm posting it just because I think it's kind of funny that Ric appears to be so pissed about his ties.
