That’s an interesting topic for a thread, Sooty, and welcome to the weird and wonderful world of Nick Cave!!!... a truly interesting and eclectic and cerebral artist, he’s very reminiscent in his approach to music and visuals of the great Tom Waits in my view, they both live in this sort of black and white slightly disturbing world right on the edge of madness….not music to cheer you up exactly!...and like Tom Waits I find that you do have to work hard at it to get into his dark music, but once you do then it’s well worth the effort ….in fact I first got into him when I saw one of the Scream horror movies! – which I guess qualifies as one thing leading to becoming interested in something else? - and it featured his song ‘Red Right Hand’ which is just an amazing track, and I then bought the ‘Let Love In’ album…
This probably has happenened to me a lot more than I realise, and so it needs some thought before I post anything....
Wow! I own all the Scream movies (excluding the most recent) and I'll have to watch again now that I know who Nick is. I think Nick has this beautiful music with a vocal that doesn't fit beauty at all but it works. It's like if Dracula was recording and showing his romantic side! I love it!
I think I might've been doing a search for the Strawberry Alarm Clock while on YouTube when they recommended this little gem of a band from South Africa. Tell me they don't sound like Zeppelin...

That's just incredible, I've just played it twice, and I'm not done yet. It starts off like Zeppelin if they were trying to sound like Jethro Tull, but then we get a whole Dazed and Confused type chaotic jam towards the end. But it's 10 minutes nearly of pretty freaky stuff, I got told off yesterday for saying we have a bunch of 'hippies' on here, but just two plays of this track and I'm telling you I'm really starting to feel seriously under-dressed without my beads and my kaftan on if I do go for a third play.
This may not exactly be the kind of thing you wanted for the thread and maybe a bit of a tenuous link but it's what immediately sprang to mind for me on reading your opener, plus I wanted to join in here
Thank you Within Temptation for introducing me to Nightwish. After hearing 'Faster' by Within Temptation on Planet Rock radio (& thanks go to this radio station for introducing me to them!) I liked it from word go so bought the album the song was from, loved it and went on to buy further of their albums. As I was so impressed I wanted to find other bands that were similar, and a quick search suggested Nightwish. I took a chance, bought a four disc box set by them and after a bit of a faltering start of not knowing whether it was for me or not - mainly because of the operatic vocals - would soon realise I absolutely loved them! Nightwish are now a very firm favourite of mine, probably more so than Within Temptation, but had I not been so enamoured with WT I would never in a million years have thought to give Nightwish a go
