^Now you folks got me thinking of upgrading my cartridge. I'm sure that Orto will improve the sonics than my current Shure needle.

My car has iPod capability. I've been taking advantage of it the last two weeks and have not used the radio. Placed on shuffle, I like my playlist much better. It can go from Led-Zeppelin to Sinatra to The Rolling Stones to Elvis and it's been enjoyable. Best thing about is that it re-charges it too.

^^There are lots of really good cartridges under $500, you don't have to spend thousands to get a noticeable improvement. I love my old Shure MK IV, it's perfect for heavy rock and roll and the solid bass response is one of the best ever for any cartridge, that's why so many people want to keep it running even though it's been out of production for decades now.

I was thinking of an nice Ortofon MC...or a Benz Micro both are excellent but they aren't cheap either.(They are over $1000... )

^^ X2 I learned that with the Ortofon 2M Blue which I know is not a high end cartridge. There is definitely benefit to be had especially if your going from MM to MC

Once the cost starts approaching the $700-$1000 though some of us begin to think twice. But in the grand scheme of things if the equipment around it can support it's going to be worthwhile.

Especially when now more than ever I am finding more and more ways acquire vinyl. I could definitely see thinking about another cartridge upgrade in the coming years.

^^I'm glad you are happy with your Blue.

I haven't made up my mind yet, but I do want to get another MC cartridge one of these days. (My Dynavector is a MC, but it's a high-output design. I am very impressed with it, in the $500 range it's pretty much the best you'll find. When I bought mine I had to pre-order it and wait and till the yearly production run was finished and they shipped them to their distributors. They usually sell out very quickly too.)

Been doing some cleaning, dug out my old Technics direct drive TT and am deciding what to do with it. I could take it in to the tech's here and see how much it would cost to fix the motor, but in that case I would consider getting a modest Pro-Ject entry level TT rather than spend money on the old one.

I inherited it from my Mom, and it did work for a while but now the wow/flutter is so bad I think the motor or controller is shot, and I'm positive Technics doesn't make parts for it anymore this baby is 30 years old at least.

^I'd find it difficult to get rid of it just for sentimental reasons. I'd say keep the money for something else. 30 years is a long time.

^^Even if I don't fix it, I'd probably keep it because it was my Mom's. I did use it that's what I bought that entry level Grado for, and it worked fine for a few months then...poof!...the speed was all over the map.

I think I'll call up Jac(Local vintage audio fanatic) and get him to give it a once over, if all it needs is a tune-up then I would spend about $50, otherwise I'll just keep it as a momento.

Turning It Over...

I hope it isn't much of a fix so that you can use it once in awhile. Touching how it was your mom that started your obsession. I healthy one I might add.

^^Without my Mom I don't think I would have gotten into music at a young age that's for sure.

How are those tapes working for you George??

I'll be cleaning the vinyl and posting pictures in the wax thread tomorrow.
