Selling points...

^The problem with buyers nowadays is some don't do their due diligence and yes lowballers think they can finagle a cheaper price. I've encountered my share selling equipment. Good for you that you did not bite. Oh and gear assembled in Japan says enough. You hardly find that nowadays.

Yamaha now has an HT pre-amp on the market.

^^That's the one thing my old DSP isn't good for, movies. But it was designed for music first and foremost.

Actually I'm glad I didn't part with it now George, it's such a beauty and especially for my classical it adds so much life to the music.

Is it just good for certain genres of music Bruce? I take it that since it has a refined sonic signature that rough and tumble rock doesn't project well. I do think that some equipment are "voiced" by their manufacturers. If you take a Denon, a Sony, a Pioneer, a Marantz and a Yamaha to me they have a certain set of sonics that are characteristic to them.

^^No it's got tons of programs for all kinds of music, but for CD's especially classical if I play something that was recorded live in the Royal Albert Hall for example...the effect is jaw dropping.

It has jazz clubs, pavilions, chamber, opera house, rock clubs, presence and basic surround too. Back when I bought it Dolby Pro Logic hadn't come out yet, it does have movie theater settings and the original Dolby Surround but I didn't use it for movies that much.

Yes you are right each manufacturer had a 'fingerprint' that defined their sound.

Was messing about with some extra speakers and my old Rotel integrated amp, it's got a modest 25 watts I think, I'd have to look it up but I connected my old Paradigm Titan speakers and then connected the cable box to the amp.

I used Deoxit Gold to clean the Rotel a few months ago then never bothered to check how it sounded, it used to have static and the right channel would shut off, but so far it's played perfectly and have to say the sound is excellent even though the Viera has very good speakers they can't compare to the Paradigms. I was going to sell the amp and the Paradigms but now I'm having second thoughts.

Combos...

Maybe you can use the Titans and Rotel combo as a "casual" set-up somewhere. Though considering the lineage of both, they would hardly can be described as such. I've never had a Rotel component, though I was once close to picking up an RSP-1098 which had a huge LED video display where you can monitor video playing or set up without having it hooked to a TV.

^^If I remember correctly Rotel was a subsidiary of Pioneer and a higher quality line. I bought it specifically to power the rear channels for my old DSP years ago and it did a fine job.

I saw one sell for about $225 not too long ago, I was kind of surprised it went for that but you can tell it's built to last. The Titans are worth about $100, one of Paradigm's most popular models and always impress people with the punch they pack for such a modest bookshelf speaker. I'll think about what to do with them in the spring, right now nobody is buying much of anything after spending their money on the holidays.:D

^^Their older gear is still collectable, you'll see them rarely on vintage sites and they don't last long. My friend had a monster with the handles and power meters, it wasn't working and I often wonder what he did with it...:hm:

But as far as I know Rotel was the "Lincoln" or "Cadillac" line Pioneer offered, I don't think they are around anymore. I bought my last two Rotel pieces(the integrated and pre-amp) in the early 90's.
