^Yep, when the time comes my Shure cartridge has to have the needle replaced and that's it. I have to add hiow insane "name" interconnects are too among other gadgets. For example...a PS Audio Noise Harvester for $75 I think. It alledgedly cleans up "noise" in the powerlines. Get that or more LPs for that amount of cash invested? Easy decision methinks.

I've never been one to subscribe to the notion I need to spend $1000's for power conditioners, special wire and connectors.

Do they give a benefit, I guess if you measured them using sophisticated instruments you could prove they do remove some noise, but most humans can't hear the difference anyway.

If you go that far then you might as well build a shed a few meters from your house, install your own generator and go off the grid completely, run DC power to your house and then you'd be set.

Modest connectors, thick speaker wire are good enough for my needs.

You could spend over $10,000 on all kinds of special wire, conditioners, connectors and maybe not hear any significant improvement. But buy a $1000 Benz MC cartridge, install it in your TT and you could hear the difference instantly no matter what gear you were using. Easy decision for me, I'd spend that money on vinyl/CD's/DVD's or some other upgrade.

The crap hi end tries to pass as a music maker, really, wire lifts, wtf ! CD blackout, $10k power conditioners !! Whatever happened to enjoying the music w/ the best system your wallet will allow you to put together ? I think sometimes it's just about changing the sound , not making it right.....

^^It's also about 'prestige' for those who can spend whatever it takes to have the best. Then they get into discussions about what is the best, and it's all a matter of personal taste anyway.

You can get great sound using basic wiring and connectors, you are far more dependent on your speakers and amplifier/preamp than esoteric wire etc.

^Yes, it is all in the name. My power conditioner are Panamaxes that cost me only $150 each which is certainly not exhorbitant. My speaker wiring is 10AWG Beldens that blows away the Monster cables or anything else with fancy jackets and construction that is being peddled. My interconnects that I have accumulated over the last few years vary [Taras, Outlaws, Blue Jeans] but nothing outrageous either. For balanced cables, I have some Monoprice ones that are sturdy, well made and thick 16AWGs.

Most of my music expenditures other than LPs/CDs the last year and a half have been for cleaners, replacement MoFi inner/resealable outer sleeves.

^^Modest gear I can see getting once you have the equipment in place to benefit from subtle upgrades.

Spending $1000's I just couldn't do it.

I'm in the same boat spent more on software(vinyl) than anything else the last year.

Old yet great...

I know someone who has a Sansui separates system [intergrated, cassette, tuner, EQ...] plus a Technics turntable along with a pair of Rogersound Labs speakers that he's had for nearly three decades. He's cared for it well and still running strong. He's never had the inclination to part with it. The last component he added was a Monster power conditioner unit which cost him $100 but nearly 75% off retail.

I did off some solid mid-priced interconnects to him and plus some 14AWG speaker wires. The sound is smooth as analog should. He was always giving his teenage son grief over his downloads until the young man decided to delve into building his own system.

We picked up an early-80's Sansui amp, tuner, and 2 speakers for under $100 at the Humane Society Thrift Shop. Then added 2 mid-70's Bang & Olufsen speakers which we found at a resale store, and hooked up our Akai reel-to-reel which I bought in 1973. The whole system kicks a*s! Analog rules!! Last night while laying back and listening to the r2r, my blouse and jeans were actually vibrating. It doesn't get any better than that

Sansui stuff...

Sometimes you can pick up "steals" at used shops. Your components are likely ones made in Japan too. I've never had the pleasure of hearing a reel to reel but have heard raves about it. Larger tapes...more data. If you can, post a pic of the rig.

My friend with the Sansui system also added an older Sony CD player. Heavy with wood panels too. It comes with a key to unlock the tray if it was being moved or placed on storage for a long period.

Hey little guy...

Tomorrow, I'll be picking up a TCC TC-750. Trading with a friend for a quartet of Radio Shack interconnects. Not the cheapo kind mind you but what was then their top of the line if that is to be believed. He is going to use them for his daughter's little stereo set in her room.



As he has moved on to a more...well much, much more expensive Jolida pre, he had no use for it. He did comment that when I use it I will be in for a very pleasant surprise. He added that I shouldn't let its diminutive stature fool me. OK, we'll see... Did do research on the net about it and reports have all been positive at least.
