Wow. Those are big mothers. I would say the "little" ones are the biggest bookshelves I've ever seen. Carvers? You don't come across those too often. Vintage...

Some call it "tweaking"...a more appropo term is "modding" I'd say. Nice setup!

They are huge! They measure 45" tall, 19 3/4" wide and 19" deep. With the stands you are looking at around 100lbs each. LG is a crazy dude - when I picked them up he managed to get them from his basement to his garage by himself. :wtf:

Anyway, we could debate all day long about the terminology, but that's really not here nor there. I guess my point is what I did was not designed to stray away from the original design, but rather bring the speaker back to its factory performance. Mods to me would be changing the original design, but I digress. :)

LG - it's good to see you again as well! I used some Howard's Restor-a-Finish and Feed-n-Wax on the cabinets and I couldn't believe the difference. With the way you kept these speakers, they turned out looking brand new. Everyone that comes in and sees them always remarks at the condition. I haven't ventured into getting the little dent figured out, but to be quite honest it doesn't bother me enough to make a fuss over. I think I may just leave it but, we will see.

Here are some more pictures.

This was before I applied any Restor-a-Finish/Feed-n-Wax:

Ain't they gorgeous? :D

Here's a shot of them in an older set-up:

That was roughly 4-5 months ago.. it took me a while to figure it out but, I finally realized that the tube gear is just not a preferable match for the IMF's. The deep, low bass requires current and lots of power. The Carver M1.5 puts out 350W @ 8 ohms and they have really opened up. The Carver pre-amps also sound fantastic - LG, which one do you have tucked away?

So far it's the best set-up I've listened to.. I love it. :)

I figured that's what your intention was. Some owners do think "modding" as using changing components within which they feel as upgrades. Back on topic, I bet those put out a wall of sound. I can understand why it pained LG to rid of them.

^^It was only because of Jeffrey's enthusiasm that I parted with them...but it was time George. I hope he enjoys them for a long time like I did.:D

I loved the look on your Dad's face when I opened the garage and he realized...how the hell are we going to fit those in my SUV...?? :heheh:

But we managed to squeeze them in. Well I have been moving them by myself for so many years I really didn't think much of it and there's still a little horsepower left in the old carcass.:grinthumb

They look beautiful, if I kept them I would have had them restored by a professional, but you did a fantastic job yourself Jeffrey.

They do love clean power and lots of it, my old 4B did a great job for 20+ years before I let it go.

I think I have the C-1 pre-amp as well, it sure looks the same as yours.

^^If you're asking about the base of the IMF's then no there are no meters. The bottom plate does come off and you have 3 adjustment scews you can use to make subtle changes to the crossover. That was always a unique feature especially the bass crossover which you didn't see on many other speakers back then or today.

I have a pair of Behringer truths. They are pretty decent although they are used more as near-field monitors.

I'd like to have a true stereo with a little bit more color in the sound since these are quite 'cold'..

Tweaking out...

Takes:

The roller did not have to do much since the vinyl has already gone through the spin clean. Whatever came through afterwards however minute was picked up.

Thirty bones is a LOT to give up but it did stabilize the LP into the platter during playback. Whether it bettered the sound is subjective or it was a negligible effect... Then there's:

AVIBM1.jpg
AVIBCONE.jpg

I removed my turntable's stock feet and installed the above two types as a combination. The isolators at the bottom with the cones [ball bearing up] as replacements. Whoa...! Did not think there was going to be a difference but THERE it was. The vocals were locked in with no smear around the edges. Bass, low end sounds tighter. Midrange was sharper, better definition...highs had more air. Not trying to sound like an audio magazine reviewer but there are no other words to describe it. Original plan was the isolators for the turntable with the cones for the pre-amp so it looks like I will have to order another quartet of each.
