That is a poignant song Thumper, and you are right too many people fall victim to drugs. It's such a waste when a little moderation is all you need to get the most out of what life has to offer.

It could be as simple as a writers trick to fit the song, and has no meaning other than a catchy chorus...

I'm more a fan of his earlier band: John Kay and the Sparrows. It was more of a blues sound. He brought his better known songs with him to Steppenwolf.
