Spinal Tap Reunion Rumored for 2014

For a fake band whose career problems formed the basis of one of the funniest mockumentaries in film history, Spinal Tap have enjoyed some truly impressive longevity.

Now it looks like we might even be getting a tour out of Nigel Tufnel (played by Christopher Guest), David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean) and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer). During a recent interview with the U.K.’s Guardian, Guest responded to a question about the possibility of upcoming Spinal Tap shows by saying, “We get asked to do shows on a regular basis, but what I will say is that we’re in the midst of talking about something for next year.”

A 2014 Spinal Tap tour makes sense, given that the movie will be celebrating its 30th anniversary. Directed by Rob Reiner, 1984′s ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ mercilessly skewered everyday rock-star foibles, depicting the band as painfully out-of-touch, past its prime and stumbling through a horribly unsuccessful tour after a long career of grabbing at popular trends of the moment, from flower-power hippie folk to misogynistic heavy metal.

Though ‘Tap’ wasn’t a big hit during its initial theatrical run, it went on to enjoy cult status on the home-video market, and Guest, McKean and Shearer have reunited repeatedly over the years, coming back together for everything from a 1992 album and video compilation to an appearance at the 2009 Glastonbury Festival. Guest reminisced about the latter during the Guardian interview, calling it “a fantastic show” and musing, “There were 130,000 people there or something. Since the film 30 years ago, we’ve gone on tour, playing Wembley, the Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall … It’s weird but great. The fiction became real.”

You'd think there would be more action in a Spinal Tap thread because this one goes to eleven.

I have both their albums plus the movie was one of the first DVD's I ever owned.

They're really good for a "spoof" band, I wouldn't mind another album from them.
