Here a couple of more modern releases: Bozzio Levin Stevens released two albums; Black Light Syndrome and Situation Dangerous are both hot and fast jazz-rock fusion. A German band called 7 for 4 combines prog/metal with jazz rock and released three albums in the 2000's. Liquid Tension Experiment meets Mahavishnu Orchestra. Fantastic.

YYZ and La Villa Strangiato by Rush are two of the best I have heard. Jos Satriani has a mess of good ones too.

Athelstone! They're a new band from the tiny Mediterranean island of Malta, based in prog rock with elements of prog metal, jazz, fusion and post-rock... just released their debut album. Definitely worth checking out! link ---> Athelstone

My favourite instrumental has to be the Snow Goose - the album that first introduced me to this kind of music ! I do also very much like Bo Hannsson's Lord of the Rings, although it took me about 6 plays to "get" - but once it clicked it has stayed with me for years.

I second the Gong albums w/ Holdsworth, and the Steve Tibbetts Yr. Great music!
