I've always enjoyed the Final Cut as it's not as hard to listen to as The Wall.

But The Final Cut is so completely dominated by Waters that it puts me off sometimes. If I remember right, every song is sung by Waters and Gilmour has nothing except for the guitar solo on the title track and I don't know what else... probably not too much else. lol. It sounds like a Waters solo album. :mad

Agree that it's a Waters dominated album and it's dark, but not like The Wall. Not much of David Gilmour on it either. Favourite track for me is The Fletcher Memorial Home having lived through the Reagan/Thatcher years. Not an album I play often.

It's kind of a fitting title for Water's last album while he was in the band "The Final Cut" which in the end wound up being him 'cut' out of Pink Floyd. It is a very dark album, but it's not surprising when you listen to Roger's solo work they are in the same vein. One of my friends is almost as much of a PF fanatic as Architect (Our most knowledgeable PF member) and he would always play Roger's solo work one day I asked him to play something light and fun...so he put in Ummagumma.......:heheh:

Ha!! Light and fun!! :oyea: I don't think anything PF has ever done could be categorized as light and fun!

Even the Syd stuff has a sinister edge to it.

Alright I tried out some songs from the pre-Meddle era. I listened to Bike (second time), Arnold Layne, See Emily Play, and Careful With That Axe, Eugene (Ummagumma and Zabriskie Point versions.)

The band sounded weird back then. I liked Bike and Careful best. When it comes to psychedelic music, I'm very close minded.

If you're not in psychedelic music then you probably won't particularly like Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (Out of the Syd Barrett songs I've heard, I like Astronomy Domine best). You might like Saucerful Of Secrets better, I'd recommend listening to Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun which is quite laid-back but in slightly chilling sort of way, definitely Roger Waters' own style rather than attempting to imitate Syd's.

I'd also recommend Atom Heart Mother, the title suite certainly isn't an easy listen but I think this is the album where the 1970s Pink Floyd sound really starts to form - Meddle is the album where it comes together with (mostly) superior songs and more focused compositions, but you can definitely hear where Echoes comes from when listening to the AHM suite, Fat Old Sun is a nice Gilmour piece, If is definitely Floyd (and is notable for Waters' first lyrical references to insanity) while even Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast has their sound - Sunny Side Up is musically similar in feel to A Pillow Of Winds, for instance. Only Rick Wright's Summer '68 truly has no relation to the albums that followed.

For a very short time Syd was capable of writing some great stuff, but he also put out some straightforward pop ditties, like Arnold Layne, and Bike. I sometimes wonder how Pink Floyd would have turned out if Syd hadn't had his mental collapse. eg Would they have been a pop band? :wa

Sorry to say but I'm trying out all of these songs and the only ones I liked were Astronomy Domine and Cymbaline. The others I tried (Set Controls, Green Is The Colour, Fat Old Sun, and Cirrus Minor) just don't click with me. I'll keep trying though.

Are there more songs musically similar to Careful With That Axe and Astronomy Domine?
