Paul McCartney‘s lingering illness has forced him to pull out of his entire Japanese tour.

McCartney, 71, contracted a virus last week, and was sick enough to make a rare cancellation of two shows at Tokyo’s National Stadium. Now Billboard is reporting that his condition has not improved and the entire week-long tour has been scrapped.

“I’d like to thank my Japanese fans for their love, messages of support and understanding,” McCartney said in a statement. “I hope to see you all again soon. Love, Paul.”

In addition to the National Stadium concerts, he was also scheduled to play tomorrow (May 21) at Nippon Budokan — where the Beatles memorably performed on their only tour of the island nation back in 1966 — and Osaka on Saturday. Tickets, some of which cost as much as $1,000 a piece, are being refunded.

However, he expects to be well enough to continue his ‘Out There’ tour next week. His website still lists the May 28 stop at Seoul’s Jamsil Sports Complex as going on as planned. In June, he will bring the tour to the U.S. for 19 dates that will carry him through the middle of August.

Unfortunately, Dave Lifton of ultimateclassicrock.com is reporting this:
Paul McCartney has been hospitalized. The 71-year old legend has reportedly checked into an undisclosed Tokyo facility for treatment for an unnamed virus.
What was originally believed to be a minor ailment that merely postponed one of his concerts at Tokyo’s National Stadium last week has resulted in the cancellation of his week-long Japanese tour and next week’s show in Seoul, South Korea. McCartney is still scheduled to bring his Out There tour to the U.S. for 19 dates beginning in mid-June, but this new development could possibly put the tour’s fate in doubt.
There has been no official confirmation from McCartney’s people on the subject, and the most recent update to his website was the announcement of the postponement of the first 2 Tokyo shows. However, USA Today cites the Sankei Sports newspaper as breaking the news. Fans have already reportedly gathered outside his hospital to show support.
Get well soon Paul - you are in my prayers.

I hope it is a simple and easily treated virus.

The MERS virus has popped up again and it's pretty scary, and spread through multi-national travel.

Paul McCartney Health Update

Here's a follow-up to the report of Paul McCartney's hospitalization:
Representatives for Paul McCartney have confirmed that the legendary musician was indeed admitted to a Tokyo hospital, as reported earlier today.
Happily, they add that the former Beatle is expected to “make a complete recovery,” although they would not reveal whether or not McCartney had yet been discharged from the undisclosed facility.
"Since contracting a virus last week that led to the postponement of tour dates, Paul received successful medical treatment at a hospital in Tokyo,” the statement read “He will make a complete recovery and has been ordered to take a few days rest. Paul has been extremely moved by all the messages and well wishes he has received from fans all over the world.”
Concern over McCartney’s health has been steadily rising throughout the week, as he postponed first one, then two, and then all of the dates on his planned tour of Japan. His next scheduled concert date is June 14 in Lubbock, Texas.
