Are their recommendations that bad? I don't know. I've never used Spotify, well because it's not available in South Africa. But I do use Grooveshark on a regular basis. But I usually just play the Classic Rock or Soft Rock stations there, or mostly specific albums.

I never had trouble with recommendations on Spotify. Most of my new discoveries are through records I have never heard before and seem to look interesting.

I like finding new things to listen to. However, I don't branch out of my "comfort zone" too much when I am exploring. Although I do consider my music tastes pretty eclectic.....

Thanks to LG and MP.....I did branch into the realms of metal.....which definitely was out of my comfort zone. My point here is that I feel people would listen to newer (or different genres) of music if the person making the recommendation is someone they trust. Someone who can give an honest opinion on the music they recommend........make a true parallel comparison with music I already enjoy.

LG once told me, if you like Ozzy Osbourne you would like Helloween. Not that these two are alike, which they're not, but Helloween isn't any "harder on the ears" than Ozzy.

As far as sites like Spotify, etc recommending music for me, I don't use those sites. However, I do use a feature in Last.fm to find music SIMILAR to bands I like.

I use Spotify and some of their recommendations are way off, although I've gotten a few for bands that I love now.

I love Southern rock so I always try to find new bands with that sound and when I find recommendations they are almost always wrong- My Morning Jacket ,Kings Of Leon to cite two.

I think part of the problem is we have achieved 'overgenrification' and cluttered the landscape with so many sub-genres it's hard to really classify music as easily as it was a couple decades ago.

What we have lost in the age of the interwebz and everything that goes with it are the old disc jockeys we used to listen to on the great FM stations, they would play anything and everything, you got to know them and trusted their recommendations. Looking on one of those online sites you have lost the personal touch, at least that's how I feel.

Yeah I have to agree with you on that.
