I got this wrong, I was thinking of Let's Go Crazy, not 1999. Although 1999 was HUGE back in, well, 1999/2000.

I never heard this until quite recently

In November 1978, The Eagles released a single for the holiday season. On the A-Side was a cover version of 'Please Come Home For Christmas". It reached #18 on the charts and was their first song with bassist Timothy B. Schmitt , replacing Randy Meisner.

The B-Side had "Funky New Year" written by Glenn Frey and Don Henley

I always thought The Eagles failed when they tried to get funky
