While they may not be celebrating their 50th anniversary quite as enthusiastically as some fans might have wanted, the Rolling Stones appear to have gotten back into gear with their latest tour — and guitarist Ron Wood thinks these dates will serve as a springboard into more new music from the group.

“We’re having a ball,” Wood told WZLX. “The shows are the best we’ve ever done. It’s a new lease on life. They’ve proved to be a kick in the pants for us. Not only can we do it — we’re better than ever.”

The excitement the band is feeling on stage could, according to Wood, lead them back into the studio. “It takes so much time and effort to take this thing back on the road. We test ourselves in stages and this is the latest surge of energy,” he explained. “We’ve got the big wheels rolling now; we’ve just got to find the gaps to record.”

And as for what the next batch of Stones music might sound like? It’s really anyone’s guess at this point, although Wood did say he thinks the two new songs they recorded for last year’s best-of compilation ‘GRRR!’ “mix in well with the repertoire.” Whenever they get around to putting together a new record, it’ll be long overdue — there hasn’t been a full-length LP of new Stones material since ‘A Bigger Bang,’ released in September of 2005.

I have a suggestion, put some effort into a decent album title, "Grrr!"...I mean seriously that is one of the worst album titles ever, like an afterthought.

Haven't paid any attention to them the last while, other than picking up a new vinyl edition of Hot Rocks I, that's my tribute to them turning 50.:D

On the one hand I love them and, when the whole game is over, I suspect they'll be remembered as the greatest rock band there ever was. On the other hand, I can't stand all of the revisionist fans pretending they've been lifelong followers on the back of one poor concept compilation and overpriced tickets that sell out in 2 hours.

If you can't answer yes or give the correct answer to all of the following (without wiki or Google) you're a Stones tourist, who likes jumping on bandwagons and wearing big lips t-shirts as a statement of fashion:

(1) do you own and regularly spin a complete Stones album, which was recorded prior to 1971?

(2) do you know who Brian Jones is/was?

(3) have you heard 'talk is cheap'?

(4) who was the Stones second guitarist prior to Ronnie Wood?

End of bullshit test.

^^I would grant them the title of "Greatest Touring Rock Band of All Time"...but not the greatest band in history.:nw:

If they had continued to produce gems throughout their 40+ year recording career then absolutely they would be the greatest ever, unfortunately their last really great album was "Some Girls", with honorable mention to "Tattoo You". Can anyone honestly say any of their last studio albums since then are really memorable?

Footnote: The new vinyl edition of Hot Rocks I sounds fantastic, they did a first class job on the re-issue.

^^ I think "Tattoo You" is their last classic album. From first track to last, there isn't a bum cut to be found. As far as new music goes, I hope Mick Taylor is involved.
