Yeah, I think that's one of the things I don't care for about it is the demo quality. There's a difference between a raw sound and just sounding like a song that still needs work IMO.

Eh? It's recorded and produced by Jack Douglas in a state of the art studio. Do you mean because it's not covered in syrupy strings and keyboards, like the ballad sh*t they've been releasing on a "new" greatest hits collection every other year since Get A Grip?

If you don't like this then I'm not sure you get the essence of what Aerosmith is about. They're not an MOR band, they're a saw toothed, dirty rock n roll band.

Entitled to your opinion of course, as I am mine.

Sure, I'm more of a Nine Lives fan where they had a little bit of everything! Regardless of who and how it was recorded and whether it was intentional to get that sound that's what is sounds like to me.

Nine Lives was fantastic, my favourite Aerosmith album next to Night In The Ruts.

Nice! Between them being my first real favorite band and buying a lot of their material on cassette and then upgrading to a shit load of their stuff including early material on Pandora's Box appreciate the spectrum of their sound. After Nine Lives my favorite would be Pumped! I do love the syrupy ballad shit and if the band created it it is as much the band as anything before or after. I think Aerosmith is trying hard to hook older fans again and that can be a cash in as much as any of their prior commercial material.

That's right and I'm one of those older fans. I guess the problem I have with the commercial material is that it homogenises the Aerosmith sound, so that other than Tyler's vocals it could just as easily be Bon Jovi, Daughtry or even Maroon 5.

The reason Rocks/ Toys In The Attic era Aerosmith was so massive in the States was because of that rough edge, hence the US Rolling Stones comparison. You can almost hear the cliff edge as you progress through the late 1980's- 1990's catalogue. Permanent Vacation was a great return to form. Pump was astonishing, possibly even one of their best ever, then about 7 tracks into Get A Grip the Freiderikson/ Diane Warren/ Desmond Child ballads kick in and it could be any US radio rock band.

Many enjoy homogenised MOR with Steven Tyler singing over the top of it, but it's not the essence of Aerosmith, which is about Perry and Whitford's guitars wailing over the best rhythm section of the last 40 years, with Tyler's spiteful, "tongue in every cheek" raunch spat over the top.

I don't mind them trying to hook in their older fans as I would like them to return to their roots as well to be honest but I do like they added a ballad to the album. Gotta have some stuff for not just the older fans.

I respect what you are saying and I can understand pulling out a song like "Pink" (the worst thing about Nine Lives) but in the same token I don't think you can just single out Tylers vocals on songs Taste Of India or even a huge hit like Living On The Edge! They may not be as bluesy but they still have guitar licks that scream Aerosmith to me. I can see "songs" and get what you mean but as far as whole albums I think they've always been a good mix except for Just Push Play which is all gloss! :)

Fair point. Livin' On The Edge, now there's a tune!
