Honorable mention: seriously, too many to list, but if I can only pick one, I'd have to go with Kirk Hammett.

Wow,I just talked about my Top 5 guitarists the other day. First off in my opinion Jeff Beck is the greatest guitarist but that's just my opinion...however, he is not in my Top 5 favorite guitarists but is in my top 10

Anyway ....my top 5 Favorite Guitarists:

1) Johnny Thunders

2) Ace Frehley

3) Ronnie Wood

4) Kim Mitchell

5) Keith Richards

Honorable mentions: Jeff Beck, Johnny Winter, Alvin Lee, Pat Travers, Rick Derringer, Link Wray

Thunders is an interesting choice. The Heartbreakers were a great band when Johnny was able to stand upright. I saw them once in NYC around '79. They began the first song by faking it to a recording, then moved to live music and found their groove for a very solid show. During the final song, Johnny stuck his microphone out through his open zipper.

Not easy narrowing to five but i'll try. I would have a different list at a different time, but Hendrix is generally my favorite.

1) Jimi Hendrix
2) Jimmy Page
3) Robert Fripp
4) Thurston Moore
5) Jerry Garcia

That's an interesting question. I really don't go so much for the virtuoso types, I'm more into guitarists with really interesting rhythms and riffs. With that in mind, here are my personal top 5 guitarists

1. Neil Young
2. Varg Vikernes
3. Ani Difranco
4. Jimi Hendrix
5. Dimebag Darrell

I'm not sure about my top five but I know that my top three is definitely:

1. David Gilmour
2. Mark Knopfler
3. Jimmy Page

To me David Gilmour is number one because of the emotional power of his playing and his ability to get so much from the fretboard, which I feel only Knopfler can match. Both are slow players and perhaps less spectacular than some of the others, Jimmy Page is my favourite of the blues-rock guitarists

I would probably go for Neil Young in fourth place. He is a long way from being a virtuoso but he totally believes in his riffs and solos and that's what makes them great, even a one-note guitar solo like Cinnamon Girl or this playing on Southern Rock. I will give Hendrix fifth place as I reckon objectively he is the probably the best there ever was, I just love the top four guys that bit more. So in the end:

1. David Gilmour
2. Mark Knopfler
3. Jimmy Page
4. Neil Young
5. Jimi Hendrix

Honourable mentions go to Ritchie Blackmore, Andy Powell and Ted Turner (I feel compelled to include both for their twin-lead guitar work) Joe Walsh and Steve Hackett.
