Re: Moxy

IMO Lou it doesn't even compare with the first three.

Based on a 5 star rating:
Moxy 4 stars
Moxy II 3 1/2 stars
Ridin' High 3 stars
Under the Lights 1 star

Re: Moxy

I had two of their vinyl records, but don't have anything right now. Tommy Bolin was in Moxy?...my memory must be going I don't remember that at all.
I read recently (during the guitarist poll tourney actually) about Tommy Bolin and that he had played a few of the guitar solos on the first couple of Moxy albums, but I don't think he was ever creditted as being in the band.

I could be wrong, but that's what I remember seeing/reading.

Re: Moxy

This is a quote from Wikipedia and might clear up the question about Tommy Bolin

"The independently produced self-titled album, MOXY, also known as the Black Album was recorded over two weeks in early 1975. Mark Smith of Bachman–Turner Overdrive fame acted as co-producer for the album. While in Van Nuys, California at Sound City Studio recording this album, session guitarist Tommy Bolin was in the studio next door.[8] Bolin was impressed with the no-nonsense, to-the-bones sound of Moxy, that when asked by the band's manager Roland Paquin to fill in he said yes. Earl Johnson was actually supposed to have done all the guitar parts, but got into a disagreement with the producer and was consequently tossed out of the studio.[9] Roland Paquin knew Bolin from when he was a road manager for The James Gang. After the Moxy sessions, Bolin continued to work on his first solo album Teaser, and later that year got the call from David Coverdale to join Deep Purple.[10] Having heard the impact of the twin guitars, Moxy then headed back to Toronto in search of a rhythm guitarist who would free up Earl Johnson to play the material on tour that had been added to the songs in the studio by Tommy Bolin. Buddy Caine, a friend of Earl Johnson's, became the needed second guitarist, allowing the group to then hit the road with a Canadian tour that included Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes, where the group mostly played small venues.

The first album found its way to hard rock stations in the southern USA. The winter of 1975 "Can' t You See I'm A Star" and "Moon Rider" were receiving heavy radio support from KMAC/KISS in San Antonio, Texas. tommy Bolin's contribution would get some much needed attention for the album in the U.S media, even though Bolin always downplayed his involvement. Moxy renegotiated a new contract with Polydor of Canada for distribution in affiliation with Mercury Records. Both labels were owned by PolyGram Records at the time, who reissued the self-titled debut album in North America and worldwide in 1976. The spring of 1976 "Fantasy" and "Sail On Sail Away" hit the top 20 charts on KISS-FM radio in San Antonio, Texas. KISS-FM disc jockey Joe Anthony had the freedom to play the album in its entirety on many occasions through the late 1970s.

Re: Moxy

just catching up with this band. I have the first three albums and I have to say they are excellent. The band was in the right time period to be successful, but I guess their management let them down. Too bad...they had it all going for them: Good music, sweet record label, and a perfect time to make it big.
:dunno:

From the Black Album, the stand out for me is "Time to Move On". Puts me in mind of something Riot would do ;)

And from Moxy II, I like this funky track "Take it or Leave It" but the track that really catches my attention is the spacy instrumental "Slippin' Out"

I finally tracked down a copy of MOXY V ...[ released 2000 ].and while its never going to be in the same class as the early MOXY albums it still delivers ! Good old Canadian rock ! The vocalist sounds a cross between AC/DC s Brian Johnson and Ian Gillan [ ....not a Bad thing mind you ]
Anyone else got a copy.....what do you think ? :grinthumb

I haven't heard Moxy V. I've only got the first album (the black album) and it's pretty good, but I don't play it much. Tommy Bolin plays the solos on most of the tracks. I read in Melody Maker, at the time, that Bolin also played on Wet Suit, on Moxy II, but this appears to be incorrect.

The YT clip from V sounds pretty good to me. Earl Johnson was still involved, but I think they missed Tommy Bolin after the first album.

Heres a track from MOXYs "Under the lights" album...frowned on by many a true MOXY fan. The album isn't bad its just a bit too laid back and slow IMO in comparison to their other excellent releases. Mike Reno later of LOVERBOY] on vocal duties
