I agree with the spirit of both statements. I know that may be dichotomy personified so let me explain: Everyone is born equal. We all have the potential to either be helpful to mankind, neutral to the issue or a pox on humanity and all levels in between. To say that someone like Lennon was important because he touched people's lives is - of course - correct but to say that he is no more important than the rest of us is also (in a very profound way) correct.
Lennon was an important voice to those who embrace leftist and or humanist causes. To the rest of us he was a talented musician who made a bad career choice and was cut down by an asshole way before his time. Weirdos like Chapman should be excecuted as a deterrant for such behavior or - most importantly - so they aren't able to become celeberties themselves by their destructive actions.

I've given this some thought, and I understand both sides of this topic.

My Gram was very, very important to me. When she passed away, it had a great impact on my family, but wasn't a worldwide news event.

My point is, I think it's not so much John Lennon is/was more important than anyone else. He was important to more people.

There's a difference there.

I still hold on to that though. I killed a fly today. did I feel bad about it? no. That fly was not important. There are many more flies like it. If I died today, My immediate family and close friends would be effected. My boss would have to replace me. Thats all I would effect. People tell themselves they are important and everyone is born equal, because the alternative is the realization that they dont matter, or more accurately, arent important. Lennon Mattered. Its not the amount of people he moved with his music. Its not how many songs he wrote or how many bands he inspired, or how many people know his name. Its what he did with the time he was given, and he did everything he wanted with it. He became immortalized by his money and fame. Im not going to be remembered in 1000 years. All ill be is a fading memory of a dead great grandfather, if that. The only way you can say everyone is equally important is if everyone contributed the exact same amount to society. And thats not going to happen.

Are you really comparing human beings to flies now? :bonk:

Likewise, John Lennon's death (or any other celebrities death for that matter) does not and did not affect me either. He was not a martyr and I wish people would stop acting like he was. He was the victim of a mentally unstable man.
