I agree with the spirit of both statements. I know that may be dichotomy personified so let me explain: Everyone is born equal. We all have the potential to either be helpful to mankind, neutral to the issue or a pox on humanity and all levels in between. To say that someone like Lennon was important because he touched people's lives is - of course - correct but to say that he is no more important than the rest of us is also (in a very profound way) correct.
Lennon was an important voice to those who embrace leftist and or humanist causes. To the rest of us he was a talented musician who made a bad career choice and was cut down by an asshole way before his time. Weirdos like Chapman should be excecuted as a deterrant for such behavior or - most importantly - so they aren't able to become celeberties themselves by their destructive actions.
